Dark orange pour from a swing top glass bottle. Aroma was delicious resin citrus oak and malt. Flavor was super smooth. Just a touch bitter but nicely balanced by the sweet malt. Not overly sweet. The oak added a nice extra dimension. Good beer.

Ceramic 750 ml swing-top bottle. Packaged on May 18th, consumed on Sep 2nd. I first tried this beer on cask back in the spring, and honestly didn’t care for it too much - my notes say that I found "more booze than hops" in the aroma and flavour, and that the palate was sweet and sticky, making it tough to finish the pint. So I left this bottle in the fridge and half-forgot about it until finally cracking it tonight. I’m not sure if it was just because of bottle vs. cask, or if the three months or so of cold aging helped it, but I found it to be a quite different and very enjoyable beer. The aroma is less boozy than I recall, but still big, with the oak, malt and hops playing very nicely off each other, creating a nice combination of orange, caramel and mellow wood. The flavour starts sweet, with some notes of caramel and tropical fruit, but it turns dry and bitter remarkably quickly, with a wonderfully long and lingering finish of pine and grapefruit and wood. Mouthfeel is full but not sticky or cloying, with just enough carbonation to keep it feeling lively. All in all, a very nice beer!

Cask at the Rhino. Amber pour. Malty and chewy with a sweet, sticky underattenuated palate. Diacetyl and DMS – they may call this an IPA – but it ain’t.

On cask at the IPA Challenge, Volo 29/05/10. Pours a clear copper, slightly orange with a very quickly vanishing head. Aroma of resin prominant hops, oily and alcohol burn followed by caramel malt. Sweetness mixed with caramel notes. Boozy. Pretty good all things considered.

UPDATED: JUL 9, 2010 [2862-20100508] Cask. Mild petrol grassy hops aroma. Hazy, dark orange body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head with lots of suspendies. Fruity thick bitter toasted orange skins flavour has oak and buttery notes with a bitter petrol hint aftertaste. Medium-full body. Surprisingly smooth for so bitter a brew. (7/3/7/3/15) 3.5

[2893E-20100529] Tap. Mild alcohol English profile hops aroma with some oak notes. Clear, amber body with a quick foamy white head. Sweet sugary molasses-like malt flavour. Medium body. Not very hoppy. (6/3/7/3/13) 3.2

UPDATED: NOV 3, 2011 Ceramic. Kindof hazy, copper. Pretty solid aroma -- spruce and floral hops, some oak as well -- which i think i more coming from the malt. You know the beer is sweet by its nose : you wouldn’t except what coming afterwards, though. For those who wants an hop kick -- that one delivers it. The problem is : that hop kick comes with a sugar kick (the lollipop variety!) as well. Totally unbalanced. I liked pretty much all of Beau offerings, but that one is pretty much a bottom-of-the-barrell. Oh well, they tried something. EDIT : 2011 version was better. Not excellent, but certainly better and wasn’t a sugar disaster anymore. Or was it just that much bitter? (99 IBU)

Draught at Chancey Smith’s- Deep hazed copper, pours a thick eggshell cap with sticky lace. Nose of fresh west coast hops, pine, citrus, perfume and caramel/crystal malts, and a bit of alcohol. Flavours are much of the same, add some tropical fruit, but focus on piney hops and sweet caramel malts. Has a bitter metallic edge towards the finish and certainly isn’t shy about the alcohol. Full bodied, long bitter finish. You can feel this bad boy after one glass. Good!

Tasted blind @ Volo, DIPA tasting 2010. Clear rich honey gold body. Nose is honey, rich malts, a little plummy/raisin character. Flavor is honey, rich malt, alcohol. Not very American in terms of hop charcter. Great rich body. If this was intended as a barleywine it would have been spot on - its a good beer. Its nice as DIPA but certainly not what the tag DIPA conjures in your mind.

Growler from the brewery. Pours a brownish amber with a white foamy head. Aroma is sweet hop and oak pine. Taste is abrupt pine bitterness of the hops and then a sweet caramel aftertaste. A great beer for Ontario, still not to the calibre of some american breweries. I applaud the effort and just hope that it continues.
