Based on a long-lost brewing recipe from the Hudson Valley in the early 1800s, we used New York State malts and whole leaf Cluster hops (a heritage variety) to authentically recreate this heirloom ale.

(Rating #4764)

600ml bottle. Medium, bubbly, white head. Hazy, banana yellow. Faint aroma, peppery, slightly fruity. Tastes slightly metallic, like it came from a can. Sweet, fruity, herbal. Kind of strange, but not bad.

pours clear bright yellow, almost fluorescent, with a very small white cap, no retention at all. sweetish malts, some corn and grainy notes, coriander, spicy pepper. almost cloying, slightly boozy. average to soft carbonation, medium body - oily, decent grassy-spicy finish. interesting but just o-k.

Bottle from the brewery. Golden straw colour with cloudy haze and a large, bubbly white head. Aroma is yeasty and bready, with curious notes of lemon, apricot and cracked grain. Flavour has a fruitiness that strikes a balance of sweet and tart (but not tart in a lambic sort of way, more laid back than that), along with peppery yeast and well-deployed hops. Interesting...

this is based on MY experience with the Vassar: Aroma:dought/bread,cereal, Apperance: pale/golden, slightly hazy Taste: slightly sweet with bitter (medium...but an odd cereal flavour I’d say) Palate: a decent body (gigidy), good carbonation, astringent and bitter finish a good heirloom ale, I’m not a fan of this genre, but a good beer that I wouldn’t mind retrying once I’ve earned more expertise as a foodie

Bottle [600ml]. Pours a hazy straw-yellow with an average size mostly-lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of straw, grain, yeast, banana, citrus, herbs and spices. Mild, fruity, slightly sweet, wheaty flavour along with grain, herbs and spices. Medium bodied. Just good, I don’t love it but its O.K. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

600 ml bottle from the brewery via Lubiere (merci!), served cool in a tulip glass. 16NO12.

App.: Hazy deep golden with a so-so white head. Aroma: Sulphur, Beau’s rustic graininess, bright lemony citrus, a little estery, hints of minty herbals, a bit fruity – tree fruits, pome fruits, a touch of caramel, a bit earthy...is there some coriander? Palate: Medium body, somewhat prickly yet loose effervescence. Flav.: Oddly cloying, fairly fruity, with some old apple juice, a little green/grassy/peppery hops, some yeasty, light esters, coriander?; more Belgian Ale than Traditional Ale, IMO; off-dry with minimal bitterness and a slightly alcoholic, grainy, fruity finish.

A whole lotta “meh”. Aren’t Traditional Ales usually dark??

[4853-20121008] Cask. Strange herbal spiced lemon balm aroma. Hazy, light orange brown body with no lasting head. Something like muted raspberry in the flavour with creamy grainy yeast. Medium body. Good. (7/3/7/3/13) 3.3

Bottle, Beaus 2012 Oktoberfest mix pack. Straw yellow, small white head. Light floral and spice aroma. Taste is light - spicy hops, sort of sweet light malt, with a sweet finish. This actually tasted similar to the zins jo kokot we just had, but not near as good. Better than the draft ratings, but still just decent.

The beer pours a slightly hazed light gold with a white cap that quickly fades to a ring. The aroma is light fruits, grains, and yeast. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavour is grass and yeast, with some light fruity notes. Easy to drink, but not something I would try often.
