8 Ball - Big, Bold & Ballsy
One of our earliest recipes, we wanted to push this big IPA all the way. So we packed it full of Rye and dry hopped it for days with American hops, using old pool balls to weigh the hop sack down in the beer. Hence the name.

Go ahead and sink a few, be rude not to really.

From tap, half-pint, drunk in a cosy atmosphere at the splendid Craft Beer Co, Islington. Dark apricot coloured body. Spotty lacing to the glassware. Prominent aroma of citrus shells. Succulent taste character offering a mix of fresh and dried fruits added by lighter notes of spices. Lingering bitter ending. Well balanced. Brit IPA at its best (London, 26.11.2012).

330ml can. Dark amber pour with a pale yellow frothy head. Malty aroma, as well as grain. Flavours of rounded hay with soft oatmeal notes.

Keg. Aroma is complex essentially grapefruit marmalade dipped in a caramel sauce gently. Pours murky orange amber with a white top. There’s more of a wash than I expected from an American pale beer. The lacing is strong. Taste is more caramelized but the fruit lingers in a pleasantly souring mash. I could easily get carried away by this stuff and the knowledge that this is literally true gives me pause.

Pours slightly cloudy brownish orange with a good beige head. Aromas of orange, zest and pine hops with a nice maltiness and hint of rye spice. Good carbonation and medium bodied. Taste is of orange and citrus with a nice whack of rye spice and slight malt sweetness. Slight soapiness at the finish just before the moderately bitter finish.

Once it finished erupting out of the can it settled to a hazy bronze colour with a two- to three-finger creamy frothy head that retained very well and laced OK. Yeast sediments precipitated but not a detraction. Carbonation low and fine. Aroma of moderately strong nice spices plus hints of pine and caramel; none of the citrus normally associated with an IPA. Taste not as nice as the aroma - moderately sweet and moderately bitter but dominated by harsh, tangy hops. Light to medium body. Soft with a lingering quite harsh tartness/bitterness on the finish.

Rye is prominently present in the taste, complimented with a bit of tropical fruit and moderate bitterness. A nice full beer and not as harsh as a regular IPA. Recommended.

29-JUN-2016, draft from flight @Brewdog Firenze. Hazy copper with a lasting, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is a bit weak. Sweet with loads of malt and especially rye taste. Grassy, dry hopped, citrus, bread, spice. Sweet, medium carbonation, quite bitter. I like these sweet IPA’s. And rye does add interesting stuff to it. Nice.

330ml can from Favourite beers. Hazy/cloudy dark orange colour with a one-two finger off-white head. Aroma of spicy orange, bread, rye, pine, citrus. Taste of citrus, orange, spices, biscuity/bready malt, other dark fruit. Bitterness is fairly low for the style, it’s a very well balanced IPA, easily drinkable, smooth mouthfeel.

Puszka z datą: 21/04/16
WYGLĄD: Barwa ciemnozłota/bursztynowa, zmętnione. Piana średniej wysokości.
AROMAT: Intensywny. Przypomina nieco Black IPA (cytrusy, jagoda, malina, nuty łodygowo- trawiaste).
SMAK: Dosyć wytrawne. Cytrusowe z wyraźną nutą zbożową, ale nie taką jak w Wheat Ale. Posmak łodygowo-trawiasty. Goryczka średnia, nieco zalegająca.
OGÓLNIE: Przyjemne, zapadające w pamięć.
