A big fat contradiction, jet black but light and hoppy.Heavy handed use of columbus, chinook and citra and some clever German malt make Betty a big, stinky brew.

Bottle. Thin head and dark brown to black colour. Smell of hops and notes of citrus, grass and raisins. Well balanced taste as far as the hops and the malts. Medium to heavy bitterness. It’s really refreshing and lingers. Medium body.

Nocturne (381) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - MAY 14, 2013
330ml bottle. Nearly total blackness with a light brown head. The aroma is really excellent, with bucketloads of American hops conjuring up citrus, passion fruit and black grapes. It plays well against notes of cola and roasted malt that help to balance things out. Oily and viscous mouthfeel with a powerful bitter finish. Really impressive stuff all round.

(Bottle, Duke’s Brew & Cue, Haggerston, London, 25 Apr 2013) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, chocolate, liquorice, resin and pine needles. Malty, roasted taste with liquorice, black coffee, dark chocolate and generous amounts of resinous, piney hops. More than medium body, quite dry. Impressive black IPA with lots of coffee, chocolate and hops. Excellent beer.

Bottle. Black ale with medium head that reduces to a residual head with good lacing. Aroma of hops and hops. Taste is a little coffee and quite a bit of hops, grapefruit and roasted malts. A little carbonation and oil on the palate. Good stuff.

Swaroga (788) - Brussels, BELGIUM - APR 28, 2013
33cl bottle. Pitch black with tanned head. The head is medium big. Nose : strong roasted aromas of malt. Coffee with milk, black chocolate. Pine and pomelo peel. Sip : well carbonated with medium thick body. Very sweet, almost like honey. Roasted aromas, black chocolate aftertaste. The beer is well hopped with pine and citrus aromas. After couple of sips I get some earthy notes and feeling on my tongue. Very good balance. A bit to cloying sweet though.

viktorvee (100) - Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 19, 2013
UPDATED: APR 21, 2013 A rather complex flavour, first of all it tastes like ipa, Hoppy, floral, then there is an intense minerality, a sucker punch of sweet, bitter, sour fading to an aftertaste of bitterness, stout-like coffee flavour. Interesting, the alcohol really comes through.

humlelala (686) - DENMARK - APR 11, 2013
(33 cl bottle from Duke’s Brew and Que; No BBD) Pours black with medium, tan head. Good retention and lace. Aroma is fresh herbal, grassy and sprucy hops with no detectable malt aroma. Oily texture, full body, medium carbonation and a bitter finish. Flavour reveaks a very smooth and well composed hoppy drinking experience with sufficient malt to put a dampener on the bitterness but without the roasted qualities that sometimes accompany dark beers. Very well done.

wilftanat (7) - Shrewsbury, Bedfordshire, ENGLAND - APR 5, 2013 does not count
330ml bottle. Couldn’t get excited about this, the aroma and flavour reminded me of CocaCola and it had about the same complexity. Reasonably well made thoughand could be far more complex if there was a decent proportion of hops in the copper rather than mainly post fermentation addition.
