This vividly flavoured stout is a great example, with powerful piny hoppy notes melding with chocolate and oozy brown malt and wafts of tropical fruit on the aroma.

Can. Dark brown close to black with a medium sized tan head. Charred malt, pine, bark, light cocoa. Soft mouthfeel, tropical fruity and citric hops comes through and blends well with the malts. The bitterness is well balanced which makes this thing pretty drinkable. Long hoppy finish.

Keg at BD ShepBush. Murky dark brown, cream tan head fades with lace. Nose of roast, juicy tropical and citrus fruit, coffee. Tastes moderate sweet cinder toffee burnt caramel malt, dry slightly ashy roast, medium hop bitterness, more citrus tropical juice, some floral and resin. Medium light body, slightly oily, moderate carb, very nice long roasty hoppy bitter finish. Sorry but this is a stout IMO, not a BIPA. A little light but enough roast. Good beer either way.

Tap at Beavertown, Tottenham, London. Black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, chocolate, coffee aroma. Tastes similar, roasty, malty, chocolate, slightly hoppy. Easy drinking stout.

Sampled from their highly decorated and colourful can. Full marks for the quirky design and silly name. Very dark brown with a good tan head. Sweet aromas of chocolate and roasted malts, and a taste which is quite sweet but very alluring. Unusually powerful hop flavours for a stout, giving a really pleasing bitterness. With this stout/pale ale hybrid the Beavertown brewery have created a real winner. Very highly drinkable.

330ml can from Good Spirits Co. Almost black, big foamy head. Woody tar hop aroma. Chocolate hop flavour. Sharp with bitter aftertaste. Unusual combination of flavours.

On tap @ the Red Squirrel. Appearance - opaque black and creamy in the appearance of the texture. A nice fawn head. It looks like a coffee. Nose - light roast, but edging towards porter with a rich treacle note and a hint of blackcurrant and coffee. Taste - more of the same. Not getting citrus or pine as expected from IPA influence, which I’m guessing this is supposed to be. Palate - medium bodied plus, with a creamy texture and a balanced sweet yet gently falling away finish. Overall - I didn’t get the India bit, but it was enjoyable.

Keg in the Horseshoe NW3. Dark black colour, thick foam, looked good. Very hoppy, bitter, not much malty flavour getting through, medium finish, would definitely be better described as a Black IPA than anything stout. It’s still a style I struggle to get my head round, but this was tasty enough.

330ml canned 17/12/14. Black, small foamy tan head, light lacing. Aroma is coffee breath, bourbon cream biscuit, touch of onion. Body is medium, soft carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is very chocolatey, nice ashy charcoal coming through, pine, no real bitterness but nice hop character. Lovely balanced flavour ... but the aroma could be better!
