This vividly flavoured stout is a great example, with powerful piny hoppy notes melding with chocolate and oozy brown malt and wafts of tropical fruit on the aroma.

Tap at tap house. Black color with dark beige head. Aroma is coffee, tangy, some hops, hints of pine. Taste is bitter dry espresso, cocoa powder, bitter finish with not just espresso, but also some hops. Fine-bubbled ticklish carbonation. Aftertaste has some lingering hop fruitiness. Impressive and uncompromising, especially for this ABV.

1/3 liter can, brauhaus, Edinburgh. 22/05/16 (in date). Pours black with a medium tan head subsiding slow average. Scent is plastic, nylon? Even soap. Taste is medium caramel toffee Stout body with light frothy hop hints. Finish has the bitterness of an IPA and the dryness as well. Good. Unimpressed unfortunately.

Tap at Taphouse. Aromatic hops on mellow roast coffees aroma. Black, creamy brown lace. Flowery, chocolate, creme brűlée. Medium light body, roast aftertaste. Really nice.

Can from Cambridge Wine Merchants, Cambridge. Purplish black with a ring of tan head. Impenetrably opaque. Scent of hot fudge sundae with a drizzle of caramel. Notes as diverse as ciffee , citrus, pine and hazelnut. A gooey chocolatey sweetness in the taste with a bitter and slightly salty edge. Turns to pure sugar-rush sweetness before bowing out on a wave of bitter hop. Delicious long finish, but surprisingly thin body. Charcoal, salted caramel and plums in the aftertaste. Beavertown have done it yet again with a tremendous recipe.

Can at Drury St. Pours black with a medium, lasting tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, slight citrus trying to cut through. Taste is roasty, coffee, slight chocolate, slight pine, long dry finish. Really strange combo but it works incredibly well.

Tap at Brewdog Liverpool. As you’d expect, roasty, bit of caramel maltiness, pine hops. Feels quite balanced though. Bit of coffee, bit milky; pretty nice.

330ml can. Dark thick stout with hints of coffee, chocolate and a little vanilla. A bit hoppy too, so kinda halfway between a porter and a black IPA.

Can by MiroB and Kazator. Thanks guys! Very intense assertive aroma. Even intensiverer taste. Lots of malty flavours, roasty, chocolate, coffee. Not remotely sweet though! Well attenuated and dry. Boldly hopped by classic grassy earthy hops. Very tasty, easy drinking, nice.
