Smoked porter with yellowish white, opening head and very dark, near black colour. Very smoked aroma: smoked herring, smoked bacon; also accents of figs, liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee grounds, plums. Very smoky taste, like smoked meat, spicy liquorice accent, dried fruits, smooth mouthfeel, roasted bitterness in the finish. I have nothing against roasted bitterness nor against smoked beers, but the combination of the two is a taste I apparently haven’t quite acquired yet. Interesting, though.

Bottled. Very dark brown with a small light bown head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, and hints of smoke and leather. The smokiness is much more noticeable in the mouth: obvious but not overpowering. Very good.

Purchased in 33cl can from Prohibition Wines. Cans seem to be the latest fashion for London craft brewers. Groovy 1960’s Roy Lichtenstein-style label. Black colour with an amber head like an extremely large espresso coffee. Aroma of coffee and hints of wood smoke. The taste is dominated by roast malts and coffee flavours with a background of wood smoke. Slightly milky, treacle sweetness at the start with hints of star anise. Very nice mouth-filling flavour and (at 5.4%) plenty of backbone. Satisfying finish, with a complex mix of milk, smoke, spices and roasted flavours.
