On tap at Craft Beer Co - Islington on 17th November 2012. Almost black with a cream coloured foam ring and spot lacing. Rich roast aroma with festive berries. Rich and intense roast malts withoutb excess sweetness, mild smoke, berry fruits and coffee in-mouth. Smoky finish with citric tang and herbiness. Smooth, slightly leathery mouthfeel. Exquisite.

Bottle at BrewDog Camden. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is smoke, BBQ flavoured crisps, fire lighters and toast. The taste is roasted malt, toast, smoke, hint of caramel, cola, light sourness, ash and some bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not particularly complex but a solid brew nonetheless.

Cask conditioned at Duke’s Brew & Que, Haggerston, London. Black with tan head. This was quite full on right from the start, fruity and wine like, a good burgundy perhaps, grapey and a roasted sweet chocolate note, smooth and lasting. A very decent beer indeed.

I love this beer. Reminds me of that first taste of Coconut Porter. That charred taste is just wonderful. The smokiness is so well balanced. Brains greatest smoked porter? Yes, I think so.

UPDATED: OCT 30, 2012 Original. Increasingly a word that is given importance, anything else being unworthy of appreciation. I own some Clarks Originals. Are they really original or an improved facsimile of an original design? The Beatles, Stones, Hendrix...all retreading where others had been, just putting a different twist on it. Were they unworthy? Take Ice T. Was he the OG? Not Hades? Rasputin? Countless others could lay claim I’m sure. If you’re looking for originality here, you’re out of luck. Bitter? A little to start but it settled nicely. Industrial.
