On tap at Craft Beer Co - Islington on 17th November 2012. Almost black with a cream coloured foam ring and spot lacing. Rich roast aroma with festive berries. Rich and intense roast malts withoutb excess sweetness, mild smoke, berry fruits and coffee in-mouth. Smoky finish with citric tang and herbiness. Smooth, slightly leathery mouthfeel. Exquisite.

I love this beer. Reminds me of that first taste of Coconut Porter. That charred taste is just wonderful. The smokiness is so well balanced. Brains greatest smoked porter? Yes, I think so.

Bottled@Duke’s, London. Very deep copper black colour with a small beige head. Aroma is smoked wood, caramel, fruits and some mild toasted notes. Flavour is sweet malts, liquorice and also quite Schlenkerla rauchlike smoked notes. A bit more of the Schlenkerlalike smoked notes and we have an epic UK beer!

Cask conditioned at Duke’s Brew & Que, Haggerston, London. Black with tan head. This was quite full on right from the start, fruity and wine like, a good burgundy perhaps, grapey and a roasted sweet chocolate note, smooth and lasting. A very decent beer indeed.

Bottle @ Duke’s. Pours a light hazy deep brown with a medium tan head. The nose is smoke, molasses, leather, brown sugar and hints of sweet jam. The taste is lovely smoked malts, charred wood, minerals. There’s an underlying caramel-dipped fruit sweetness that balances this beer nicely. Some espresso. Medium body, rich mouthfeel. Despite this, the beer doesn’t feel heavy. You could easily have a few of these. Overall, a really nice beer. It matched with my ribs quite nicely!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Leighton (6989) - London, ENGLAND - JUL 21, 2012
Cask at Duke’s, London. Pours black-brown with a very tight, creamy tan cap. Nose holds a bit of burnt earth, subtle smoke, and some dark berries. Flavor is full and medium sweet, with sturdy and true smoke, some fire and light minerals, dark fruits and dark sugars. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Mild sticky sweet finish with lasting smoke punch, modest dirt and earth, light tangy berries, some charcoal, hints of ham and brown sugar. Quite sweet but pretty dynamic and well balanced overall. Probably the best British-made smoked beer I’ve encountered.
