3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Multiple fresh bottles over the years in Bambergerland: Rusty chestnut. Tight pearly foam. Clean malt aromatics of nuts, cocoa, tilled earth, honeyed biscuits and toasted bread. Hops contribute a hint of licorice beneath. Delicate pinpricks of carbonation. Firm body. Artfully layered breadcrust, plum skin and a dusting of cocoa merges with a scratch of earthy, anise-tinged bitterness. Strikingly succulent hoppiness steps up to match the fat but clean malt core. Polished malt continually reveals its many dimensions, with a pils-derived vanilla cookie crispness smattered with tiramisu and creamed java notes. Discernible unripe-plum acidity boosts drinkability yet does slightly inhibit development as it displaces some of the powdery textures. Assertively hoppy and licoricey finish is charged with a staunch mineralic snap which paves the way for complex malt notes of cookie, hazelnut, creamed java and toffee. An enjoyably clean and harmonious Franconian dunkel.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle from the brewery, at our Bamberg appartment. Clear brown pour with white head. Aroma of old dusty malts, caramel, vegetal notes, boiled veggies. Taste is sweet, dull and cardboard like. Palate is watery and carbonation is light - everything that can make a dunkel bad short of infection is present here. :(
