3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - DEC 29, 2011
Fresh bottle purchased at the brewery in Nov. 2011: Deep golden. Fizzling eggshell foam. Delicate and clean nose with hints of toffee-dabbed nuts, spicy and earthy hops and distant citrus esters. Natural, expressive carbonation. Opens with a vivid wave of nutty Munich, fresh baking bread and a touch of pie crust. Hops are buried within and are utilized with a careful finesse. Fine brush of appetizing bitterness gorgeously harmonizes with the toasty, honeyed biscuit malt. Also some deeper-rooted pils malt which evokes thoughts of baguette and cracker. Some apparent graininess taints the otherwise polished malt with accents of burnt wood which amplifies the dryness consequently dispersing the softer elements. Ends with an assertive Munich punch reminiscent of deeply browned biscuit along with exaggerated dryness induced by the lurking graininess. Pretty good...a little grainy, but nicely layered malt. Andreas’ departure left a big void to fill, and evidently from a recent visit things just ain’t the same at Beck Bräu. Among the numerous mediocrities being served, this is one of the higher-quality offerings we found during our last visit.
