MaxxDaddy (208), Hoboken, New Jersey, USA Feb 12, 2008 On tap @ the brewpub. Stout black with some off-white head. Can’t say there was much going on in the aroma here, some slight oatiness and chocolate, but it took a while to dig it up. The taste let me down as well. Just didn’t have the flavor i was lookin for, particularly after that awesome foreign stout of theirs. On the plus side, this brew was noticeably oaty in the taste, along with faint wisps of roasted malts. Decent mouthfeel with a slightly roasty, short finish.
rodenbach99 (428), Longueuil, Quebec, Canada Sep 28, 2008 en fût sur place, bière noire, mousse beige, agréable nez de torréfaction , en bouche tout est en rondeur finesse, silky, moins bonne que la dernière brosse, puzzl (1820), New York, New York, USA Feb 15, 2008 I think this was the beer that drove the point home. My second trip to Montreal, already 3 stops at Dieu du Ciel with never a very satisfying experience. I now realized, wow, I like this place way better. The atmosphere, personality... the immense, historic bottle collection and, of course, the foozball table. And then lets not forget all these wonderfully crafted, interesting beers. This place kicks ass.
Anyway, this was tied for the best beer I had here, with the imperial stout (Reve). Rich oatmeal aroma, a pure roastiness and great bitter coffee finish. Flavor is big on the coffee, bitter malts, and dark chocolate extraordinaire.
It’s nice to be able to get that off my chest. I like this place better than Dieu du Ciel. I like this place better than Dieu du Ciel. There, I said it. Don’t hurt me. Next time in Montreal I know what my first stop will be. Glouglouburp (2006), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 21, 2007 Black body with a small tan head. I guess it wasn’t the best batch when I decided to rate this one. Very little in terms of roastiness/coffee/chocolate. Flavour of generic black (non-chocolate) cake. Mildly hopped with fruity notes of grape juice and a light astringency. Overall it felt “juicy”. This is the regular entry stout from one of the best brewpub I know. I’m sure it is usually better than that, this pint was a below-par stout. I’ll wait a few months and get another pint from a different batch. Oh well, even Tiger Woods misses a short putt once in a while. radiomgb (1776), Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Jun 11, 2007 Black in colour with ruby edges, beige coloured head, good retention, lots of lacing. The aroma is quite roasty, some dark chocolate, coffee with milk. The flavour has lots of chocolate, roasted coffee, some light liquorice, mocha, nutty. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, medium carbonation. Finishes long, creamy and roasty. This is along the lines of DDC Déesse Nocturne, quite good.
Draught at Bedondaine et Bedons Ronds in Chambly, Quebec on December 28, 2006.
