Tap at brewpub. Conventional barley wine, quite similar in its caramel maltiness, moderate citrusy hopping and acrid taste of which I’m not a fan of. Notes of fruits (cantalope, banana). Well done, no doubt, but quite conservative. I liked "Le Tonique", oak aged, a lot, lot more.

Drank on tap (12 oz) at the brewpub, on April 14, 2011. Red Caramel, small head. Sweet aroma of raw barley, a little mineral. Malted barley dry taste, not too sweet, mild bitterness. Very dry for its style but good!
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Lubiere (6979) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 2, 2011
Aged for one year. A reddish amber ale with a thin creamy dark moka head. In aroma, a rather funker up vinous malt aroma, raisins, pinhey hops and treacle, quite nice. In mouth, a smooth vinous malt with loads of attenuated hops, grapefruits, smooth and bitter, well melded togetherm a classic aged barley wine. On tap at brewpub, Dec. 26 2010.

on tap at the brewpub. pours a dark mahogany with a huge, creamy white head that leaves some gorgeous lacing on the tulip glass. aroma is loaded with caramel and hops. taste is sweet, maybe too sweet. butterscotch and sweet malts dominate the flavour. a dry bitter finish proceeds. mouthfeel is good. full bodied and medium carbonation. i enjoyed the Tonique much more.

Un verre en fût sur place au soleil. Bière orangée avec peu de mousse. Le nez est très sucrée, bonbon avec un peu de levure. En bouche la bière est très sucrée, gros goût de bonbon avec un peu d’herbe.

In short: Boring sweet soft candies and fun leafy hops make for an average Barley Wine
How: Tap at brewpub
The look: Partly cloudy dark copper body topped by a very small beige head
In long: Nose of candy store and leafy hops. Taste is very sweet, lots of candies (the soft kind), caramel. The mouthfeel texture is a very sticky. In fact, to me this beer tasted like jelly beans. Alcohol is a bit apparent. This could have been a boring beer but fortunately a whole lot of leafy hops come to save the day. Not a bad beer but I wasn’t too found of the jelly beans taste. I used to like jelly beans as a kid. I’m still young at heart, but I’m much older in most other places.

(Rating #2952)

My Bottom Line:
This Barley Wine’s biscuity malts are adorned with traces of caramel which swiftly dip into a prominent citrusy hop character, leaving a lengthy spicy and leafy bitterness.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the misty bronze.
-Alcohol warmth is felt throughout.
-The caramel malt presence is delicate for the style.
-The soft, cuddly body befits the natural carbonation.
On tap at the brewpub.
