On tap at Harbord House in Toronto, served in a tulip. Pours deep black with a moderate tan head that remains and leaves a small amount of lace. On the nose, there are notes of roast malt and noble hops, along with subtle smoke and earth. The flavour is dry and roasty with subtle hoppiness and a touch of molasses. The finish is long and roasty but fairly well balanced. On the palate, it is medium in body with a slightly dry texture and average carbonation. Overall, a decent black lager with nice malts and good balance. 2013-04-16

Tap, pours dark black, aroma is roasty, flavour is roasty and a bit of chocolate and coffee, really nice smooth offering

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Pours oily black with some head. This is more malty, malted chocolate beer than a dry or bitter shwartzbier. A sweeter version of the style. An above average mouthfeel. There is roast, but it is hitched to the chocolate and chocolate malt.

Black color, with creamy head. Mild aroma of roasted malt, some dirty water. Dry mouthfeel, roasted malt with dry dark chocolate; correct bitterness. Quite good.

Pretty good for a scharzbier, if that’s what it is. Smells a little dark and has some character. Tastes better than yer average black lager, whatever that means. Hell, last beer of night.

A dark brown schwarzebier with a thin brown head. In aroma, sweet chocolate malt with chalky notes, grassy, OK. In mouth, a bitter chocolate with chalky notes, coffee, not bad.

This style is based on Germany’s Schwarzbier. It’s colour befits its name and it pours with a small head. It’s five-per-cent alcohol and rates a 23 IBU on the bitterness scale. Espresso and bitter chocolate are the predominant flavours in this medium-hopped brew that some people may be able to drink more of in one sitting than a heavier porter or stout.

September 14, 2012 - at The Beer Academy - draught sample. Very dark - ruby/black, clear with pretty much no creamy/frothy head. Quite roasty - dry, nutshell, oily malt, fairly bitter (generic/herbal) - frankly it’s a bit harsh, like a light black IPA (7-). Taste - nowhere near as roasty or bitter as the aroma; weirdly sweet, something reminding me of burnt grape juice (6-). Slick, watery, flat, burnt with a building harshness in the finish - I really didn’t like it.
