3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 JoeMcPhee (7622) - Toronto, ON, Ontario, - JUL 8, 2012Deep brown pour. Full rich chocolatey aroma with a little bit of light roast. Medium bodied but quite well balanced. A touch of coffee and some light roasted astringency that cuts the malt sweetness. There is a bit of toasted base malts in here - perhaps Munich or Vienna. Nice porter - really works.

June 20, 2012 - at The Beer Academy launch event. Draught sample. Black pour, solid smallish rocky pancake batter mottled tan/light brown head. Aroma is oily and nutty, an odd one - ropey, bitter, acidic, a little medicinal. Taste - very interesting; smokiness overriding a nutty/nougat sweet roasty malt body - light kerosene and dry woody bitterness (7+) - mineral/iron tang to it as well. Average slick/syrupy body, mild carbonation, with a dry oily/slightly Islay sharp finish - wants to be thick, but it fails in that, but otherwise I really like this - their most interesting beer, I think.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 blankboy (5153) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 31, 2012
Draught at the brewery, June 20. Pours a very dark brown with a small diminishing frothy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, cream and very light leafy hops. Slightly sweet flavour of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and lactic notes. Average bitter finish. Average bodied. Not great but pretty good, the best of the lot.
Note: Rated on opening week and some of these beers may be tweaked in the following weeks, if that’s the case I will re-rate in the future.

On tap. Jet black pour, big beige head. Big roasted malt aroma, but also some soft satisfying milk chocolate aromas, with touches of coffee, and soy.
Very soft carb due to the nitro tap, and a solid mouthfeel. Light to medium bitterness with a solid roasted malt finish with accents of bitter cocoa, and coffee. I’m impressed with this porter.

On tap at the Beer Academy.Best one of the night, on the bitter side. Bitter chocolate works for me, 30 IBU well crafted. Licorice aroma. Cream mouthfeel. Suitable carbonation, middling mouthfeel.
