Cask, handpump @ The Beer Engine, Newton St. Cyres, Devon.
Ruddy tinged tawny chestnut in colour, not quite bright but has an oily shimmer when held to the light. A houdini head, now you see it now you don’t, settles to but an island of white atop. Mixed bag on the aroma; caramel, burnt sugar, bitter, dried fruit peel mix, old staling port wine and sweetened, dried prunes and dates. Good body, big, rounded and smooth on the palate. Lots of chewy sweet malt and bitter dried fruits like raisins, sultanas and prunes. A tangy edge of orange marmalade, sweet and sharp, before a swallow reminiscent of fruit mince pies. Lingers long on the palate. Has a dusty edge that balances out its sugary side, and a seemingly warming effect although it’s not a potent brew. This is a lovely bitter, full of life, full of flavour and not too heavy. Easily their best, but not the most sessionable. A few pints of these is more than enough.

Cask at Stortford Beer Festival 2011. An amber beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of matl and caramel as well as lighter notes of fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and fruits - especially peaches, leading to a lightly bitter finish.

Cask Handpump at the Fat Cat, Sheffield 16/01/2010 A little spiced malt aroma. Golden amber coloured strong in alcohol and slightly hoppy with a hint of bitterness in a malt finish.

Cask (gravity dispense), Reading Beer Festival, April 2006. Chestnut colour. Fairly weighty in alcohol terms for a UK bitter but drinks easily enough. Very well judged balance of chewy malt and tangy, spicy hops, although the aroma is quite subtle and restrained. Plummy fruit comes through on the palate. Plenty of body and grip on the finish. Mothfeel is clean as a whistle. Very nice.

Cask gravity at the Abbotskerswell Beer and Food Festival, 07/10/2006. A dark brown colour. A strong aroma of plum and dark fruits with caramel sweetness. Quite malty with honey. It was nice enough, but I was hoping for better.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 06. Copper/brown colour with off white head. Red berry/yeast aroma with a bit of vanilla. Quite good hp. I like the fruit which has red berries running throughout the beer.

Cask Conditioned at The Beer Engine, Newton St Cyres, Devon. Brown amber beer with sticky white head. Sweet malty beer with a plummy background and bags of hops. Nicely bitter on the finish, a very decent premium bitter.
