COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 17th century Britain beer was the drink of the common man. Wine was for the wealthy, tea was for the weak and water was usually quite poisonous. Men, women and children drank beer morning, noon and night. The most popular type of beer was porter because of its modest price and its nutritional value. One of the most popular porter brewers, and often incorrectly credited with the invention of the beer, was Ralph Harwood. This beer is inspired by the brown porter made at the time. TASTING NOTES Enters the glass with a deep mahogany with a small tan head. The nose quickly fills toffee and sweet chocolate. Smooth in flavour and with a big mouth feel without significant bitterness from the hops. Ends full, creamy and lush. FOOD PAIRING Should be paired with food as it could have been served at Harwoods time. A steak- and kidney pie should work well or for the slightly more modern touch serve it with a porter house steak smothered in a wild mushroom and oyster gravy.

Bottle (33cl) from Vinmonopolet, Oslo. Black/dark brown colour. Inch-thick beige head, good retention, leaves a thick bubbly film and considerable lacing. Sugary, malty aroma with wood, tobacco, lactose, chocolate, coffee, licorice. Medium body, average carbonation, syrupy mouthfeel. Semi-sweet, rich woody-malty taste that grows drier towards a licorice-dominated finish. Well-balanced, perhaps a bit too sugar-rich. Long aftertaste.

Bottle from Vika enjoyed at home
Pours dark brown, black in glass, massive tanned head. Smells of roasted malts, nuts and hints of coffee. Moderate sweet, a touch of roast and coffee, some smoke as well, yeast influence in the back and a hint of nuts. Moderate bitter finish, earthy and soily flavors. A very nice porter

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2014 On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Very dark brown colour, nearly black, creamy tan head. Very malty aroma, with notes of molasses, mild coffee, chocolate and liquorice. Lovely malty flavour, with the same elements as in the aroma, but not too sweet. Some earthy hops are noticeable, but the bitterness is low. A fine example of the style!

Big brown lasting head. Opaque black body goes deep dark brown at edge with floaties. Roasty earthy chocolatey aroma with coffee resiny notes. Dry-sweet roasty earthy coffee taste with resiny wooden notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish oily chocolatey roasty aftertaste with resiny coffee notes. Excellent! Full of flavour and highly drinkable. Has no connection with 1720s porter (which was sour), but lovely anyway. (0.33l bottle, from wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2014 Tap @ Nordic
Dark reddish cola brown beer with toasty head leaving lacing on the glass. Aroma has roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and loafy bread. Flavor has licorice, chocolate, coffee and general sweetness. Finish is intensely bitter for a while, then a longer finish is mild with dry roastiness, sweetness and some alcohol. Palate is medium full and slick. Nice sweet porter with kinda reminiscent of some brown ales.
