COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In 17th century Britain beer was the drink of the common man. Wine was for the wealthy, tea was for the weak and water was usually quite poisonous. Men, women and children drank beer morning, noon and night. The most popular type of beer was porter because of its modest price and its nutritional value. One of the most popular porter brewers, and often incorrectly credited with the invention of the beer, was Ralph Harwood. This beer is inspired by the brown porter made at the time. TASTING NOTES Enters the glass with a deep mahogany with a small tan head. The nose quickly fills toffee and sweet chocolate. Smooth in flavour and with a big mouth feel without significant bitterness from the hops. Ends full, creamy and lush. FOOD PAIRING Should be paired with food as it could have been served at Harwoods time. A steak- and kidney pie should work well or for the slightly more modern touch serve it with a porter house steak smothered in a wild mushroom and oyster gravy.

Dark color, almost black with mahogany shades; medium sized creamy beige head. Nice aroma of roasted malts and bread. Full bodied; moderate roasted malt flavor, dark chocolate, light residual sweetness, some bread; correct bitterness. Very well balanced. Nice.

On tap @ Fermentoren. Looks like a porter with a deep deep dark brown, near blackish body under a dark brown chocolate ice cream looking lacing as-hell-head. The nose has lots of mocha and dark Belgian chocolate. Almost like konfekt chocolate, the darkest kind with traces of vanilla, wood and mint. Turns out the mint comes from my girlfriend that’s sitting next to me and have been snusing all night. This can help make sense of the fact that I have gotten aromas of mint in every other beer I’ve had tonight, including Aercht Shenkerla Klausen. Anyhow, we have moved the girl to a isolated place so the mint should hopefully fade soon. Other than mint, this smells lovely. It feels thick and light oily in the mouth and it has a average carbonation level. Like the taste also. Even if it has a little bit of green banana dryness on the tongue, the chocolate dominates. Gunpowder with cocoa powder and wet rocks and some strong roastiness in the finish. Lingering as heck, and it’s leaving the mouth quite dry in the finish. All the way in the end I get a warming prickling chili sensation on the tip of the tongue. A truly interesting and explain-the-situation beer. 09.01.2014

Aroma is smoky, some black licorice, espresso, molasses, guava and dark roastiness. Taste is similar to aroma with a deep rich malt profile. A sweet malt finish with light bitterness. Appearance is black, medium mouthfeel with a beige head that retains fairly poorly.

Draught @ Fairbar, Aarhus. Pours cloudy very dark brown with small beige head. Clear aroma of malt, fruit, yeast and coffee. Sweetish, malty flavour, with well-pronounced notes of fruit, roast, and alcohol, whose presence is well discernible. Hints of dark chocolate and liquorice. Bitter, slightly roasty aftertaste, with sweetish notes. Decent, indeed, but nothing really, really special for the style.

Aroma is of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, roasted caramel. Some alcohol on the nose. Taste is very rich and roasty tasting a lot like the aroma. Alcohol comes of quite strong. Defiantly a sipper. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Beer Revolution Edmonton. Opaque black with a slight reddish tinge around the edges of the glass. Head is thick but coarse and dissipates quickly. Aroma is chocolate and cola, fairly faint. Taste is the same but quite strong, and with a hint of licorice. The alcohol and carbonation is definitely noticeable and burns the tongue a bit. and Aftertaste is bitter dark chocolate and coffee, and lingers for some time. Overall a very nice Porter but more on the stout side than I was expecting.
