COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: In the Trappist monasteries an extra strong and good ale was brewed during the lent to keep the hunger at bar. The sweet drops on an empty stomach, combined with the much idle time occasionally led to less steadfast members of the order giving in to more earthly excesses. They went under the name "Malus Pater" - the bad father. With this ale inspired by the trappists you can now even do the same. And remember: God sees everything, but he doesn’t tell!

Bottle 59 cl from erzbierschof.ch. Brown very dark, brownish and rough foam bad looking. Nose of caramel, molasses, alcohol. Very sweetened taste, round and syrupy, chocolate, dry fruits, madeira, liquor-like and doped with candy. Too much residual sugars, limit of the sickness. Beer without class, just like the label. Grave et sine praestantia cervesia.

UPDATED: FEB 19, 2012 Deep black body with creamy tan head. Apple juice, maple syrup, fennel, cloves, dark caramel, some smoke, honey cereal and rye bread. Lots going on and lots of good stuff, luckily. Super rich taste, light burned at first, with a sweet, raisin-y sweetness in the middle and a long, developed aftertaste. Good amount of warming alcohol and an oily texture that leaves a film of goodness. This can totally compete with the classic Belgians with their long history. The well-carbonated palate and velvety, fruity sweetness make this a world class brew. Clearly a knowledgeable and focused brewer at work. There, a Malus Pater review without mentioning the church once. Ah... damn. (50cl bottle, 7,20 EUR, unfortunately) (Rating re-indexed)

Almost black colored pour. Large tan head that slowly falls away. Plenty of lacing left behind. Chocolate, raisin, and sugar aroma. Slight bit of earthy yeastiness as well. Taste is awesome. Big raisin, prune, some chocolate and vanilla. Sweet, almost barleywine like. Hint of alcohol, but it is really well hidden. This is way better than I thought it would be.

In short: A super sweet 15% burgundy fruity beer. Relatively easy to drink monster, excellent for what it is
How: Bottle 50cl, consumed relatively fresh, almost 4 years before expiration date
The look: Cloudy dark burgundy body topped by a small beige head
In long: Uber-rich toffee and dark fruits nose, this beer smells like a million calories. Also present in the aroma were some less pleasant paper notes. Taste is caramel, toffee, dried dark color fruits, figs, bubblegum. There is also a liquorice flavor but not like typical beer liquorice flavor, actually the liquorice flavor was like a liquorice alcohol such as Sambucca or something like that. What’s surprising about this beer is that is doesn’t taste as sweet as expected. It’s still sweet but there’s something about the tobacco-ish hops and paper off-flavor that seem to suck away the sweetness. Anyway I thought it was actually quite easy to drink for a 15% monster of a beer. Certainly not a great Abt (this is far from a classic abbey style Abt) but as a big fruity sipper I thought this was excellent. I’m usually not a fan a big monster beer but I can sometimes stray away and indulge in such a beer, I’m sure that even the cute Tony the Tiger occasionally puts the Frosted Flakes aside and rips apart a gazelle for dinner.
