COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: In the Trappist monasteries an extra strong and good ale was brewed during the lent to keep the hunger at bar. The sweet drops on an empty stomach, combined with the much idle time occasionally led to less steadfast members of the order giving in to more earthly excesses. They went under the name "Malus Pater" - the bad father. With this ale inspired by the trappists you can now even do the same. And remember: God sees everything, but he doesn’t tell!

from erzbierschof.ch - pours a hazy dark brown beer with a persistent dark beige foam left; a robust aroma of biscuit, prunes and apples; moderate carbonation and a strong malt body, very sweet, no bitterness and a long aftertaste of dark fruits and toasted malts with pretty lot of residual sugars

Bottle... Cloudy brown ale with a small, frothy, beige head. Good retention. The phenolic aroma presents vinous notes and dark fruits. Also, herbal and rooty components abound. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The flavor is sweet and tangy; vinous and herbal. Lengthy brown sugar and cocoa finish. Kudos to Plovmand for providing the bottle!

Bottle..Dark red color with a small brown cream head. Aroma has sweet malt, sugar, alcohol, caramel, candy, dark fruits, deep rum-like notes as well. Quite spicy yet very sweet. Taste is quite strong, lots of alcohol and a large malt base. Lots of flowery dark fruits, candy, sugar and caramel.

Bottle. Pours jet black with a foamy tan head that quickly shrinks to a surface ring. Sweet, fruity aroma has caramel, vanilla, sultanas, cherry, dates, golden syrup and chocolate notes. Flavour is still quite sweet, reminiscent of cane sugar, but less complex than the aroma, with less fruit and more straightforward malt characteristics. Mouthfeel is thick and oily, almost syrupy, with soft carbonation and a moderate sweet, slightly boozy finish. Overall this fell slightly short of expectations and was lacking in complexity, but is still a pleasant brew and a particularly good nightcap.

Small, receding, slighly irregular beige head over deep-brown to black beer. Very perfumey nose with marzipan, bubblegum, rosewater, suggesting perfumey sweet. Fruity esters and dark malts. Very sharp-bitter liquorice and drop - even salt one. Some fruity background notes, fruitdrops, but all drowned in the bitter liquorice flavour. Bitter chocolate retronasal. Well bodied, slick to viscous, alcoholwarming. Just a taste I abhorr, sorry.

Thanks Hopscotch for the share, lovely label. Nose is faint traces of what should make up a good (to me) quad, raisins and brown sugar and figs, but also alcohol presence. But you have to dig for the good, and the alcohol is a bit much. The taste is a bit muddled on the palate, some ambiguous sweet flavors, and a kind of oddly dry/bitter finish. Meh.

As always im abit skeptic tasting a non belgian abbey ale. And with good reason i think. This one is hazy dark brown with a nice dense brown head. Aroma has some ripe fruity phenols, but its pretty far from the belgian ones in that they arent as intense, complex and smooth. The fruit is backed up by a rather big amount of hard roasted malt, and oc alchohol. Flavor is sugery sweet and actually more roasted bitter than sweet, with notes of dark chocolate and liquirice. I really like the beer, but i find it very different from the belgian abt which i enjoy even more.

Bottled from Bierkompass. Dark ruby color with nice thick beige head. Aroma is sweet, dried red fruits. Taste, dried red fruits, honey, milk chocolate. Alcohol is nicely hidden. Nice beer.

Bottle shared with friends at Klooster. Always happy with Beer Here beers and this quad did not disappoint. Great flavours and a label that’s guarenteed to get some laughs.
