COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

English: In the Trappist monasteries an extra strong and good ale was brewed during the lent to keep the hunger at bar. The sweet drops on an empty stomach, combined with the much idle time occasionally led to less steadfast members of the order giving in to more earthly excesses. They went under the name "Malus Pater" - the bad father. With this ale inspired by the trappists you can now even do the same. And remember: God sees everything, but he doesn’t tell!

from erzbierschof.ch - pours a hazy dark brown beer with a persistent dark beige foam left; a robust aroma of biscuit, prunes and apples; moderate carbonation and a strong malt body, very sweet, no bitterness and a long aftertaste of dark fruits and toasted malts with pretty lot of residual sugars

Bottle... Cloudy brown ale with a small, frothy, beige head. Good retention. The phenolic aroma presents vinous notes and dark fruits. Also, herbal and rooty components abound. Full-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and medium carbonation. The flavor is sweet and tangy; vinous and herbal. Lengthy brown sugar and cocoa finish. Kudos to Plovmand for providing the bottle!

Small, receding, slighly irregular beige head over deep-brown to black beer. Very perfumey nose with marzipan, bubblegum, rosewater, suggesting perfumey sweet. Fruity esters and dark malts. Very sharp-bitter liquorice and drop - even salt one. Some fruity background notes, fruitdrops, but all drowned in the bitter liquorice flavour. Bitter chocolate retronasal. Well bodied, slick to viscous, alcoholwarming. Just a taste I abhorr, sorry.

Bottle I bought at De Molen, shared with DutchDrebus. Brown color, ok smell and good taste. Also good carbo and medium to full body, alcohol not strongly present even though the beer is 10%ABV.

Dark, dark brown. Has an off-white head, mostly lasting. Sweet aroma, notes of dark, dried fruits and malt. Flavor is heavy sweet, more dark bread, fruit, grain, faint roasted. Syrupy texture. Soft carbonation.

Bottle. It pours an opaque dark brown with a creamy light tan head. The aroma is loads of sweet caramel, sweet ripe fruit, dates, raisins, light alcohol and dark fruit. The flavour is dark sweet ripe fruit and loads of caramel. Some alcohol in the finish. Nice but heavy stuff.

larsga (5962) - Oslo, NORWAY - AUG 15, 2011
Smallish brown head. Just barely translucent clear deep dark red body with light carbonation. Fruity toffeeish soy sauce aroma with bubblegum, chocolate and alcohol notes. Dry-sweetish fruity toffeeish bubblegum taste with soy sauce notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, slightly hot mouthfeel. Dry herbal licorice and chocolate aftertaste with soy sauce and fruity bubblegum notes. Decent, but not very interesting. (0.5l bottle, Fish & Beer, Copenhagen.)

In short: A super sweet 15% burgundy fruity beer. Relatively easy to drink monster, excellent for what it is
How: Bottle 50cl, consumed relatively fresh, almost 4 years before expiration date
The look: Cloudy dark burgundy body topped by a small beige head
In long: Uber-rich toffee and dark fruits nose, this beer smells like a million calories. Also present in the aroma were some less pleasant paper notes. Taste is caramel, toffee, dried dark color fruits, figs, bubblegum. There is also a liquorice flavor but not like typical beer liquorice flavor, actually the liquorice flavor was like a liquorice alcohol such as Sambucca or something like that. What’s surprising about this beer is that is doesn’t taste as sweet as expected. It’s still sweet but there’s something about the tobacco-ish hops and paper off-flavor that seem to suck away the sweetness. Anyway I thought it was actually quite easy to drink for a 15% monster of a beer. Certainly not a great Abt (this is far from a classic abbey style Abt) but as a big fruity sipper I thought this was excellent. I’m usually not a fan a big monster beer but I can sometimes stray away and indulge in such a beer, I’m sure that even the cute Tony the Tiger occasionally puts the Frosted Flakes aside and rips apart a gazelle for dinner.

Svesse (5855) - Hässelby, SWEDEN - JUN 29, 2010
(Draught at Ölbaren, Copenhagen, 17 June 2010) Dark brown colour, almost black, with creamy beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, raisins, prunes and dark bread. Malty, fruity taste with dark bread, roasted malt, raisins, prunes, dried fruit, brown sugar and a spicy , herbal bitterness in the finish. Full body, smooth and rounded moutfeel. Fairly sweet with a whiff of warming alcohol. Rather heavy beer in excelllent balance, which makes it very drinkable. Lovely beer!
