Helmuth is a beer inspired by the German Kellerbier (or Zwickel as they are also known). It is a unfiltered lager, usually served very fresh and thus less clean and bitter than normal German pilsner or Helles but with more body, fruitiness and complexity making it a most satisfying beer. It was decided that the beer needed to have a twist distinguishing it from its German cousins so we used the rarely used American Athanum hop. The beer is being brewed as a collaboration project between Ugly Duck Brewing and Beerhere on initiative of the Finnish beer geek and importer Juha Ikonen from the famous Finnish pub Pikkulinto.

500 ml bottle, from Matkroken Stokka. BB date 10.01.2014. ABV is 4.6%. Golden colour, slightly hazy. Large white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, including lychee, some less fresh malty notes (probably due to its age). The flavour is fairly fresh and drinkable, with a nice and fruity hop character, but again with some less fresh malty notes. Should have sampled this beer when it was fresh - still not bad.

orange, peach-like unclear color with medium white head, hoppy aroma with stonefruit and some citrus, some spicy notes as well, earthy and pinelike hop-aroma, creamy mouthfeel with lively carbonation, a lot of hop flavours with fruit and citrus, some more spicy earthy flavors before bitter finish, lang lasting bitterness

Endelig smagte jeg en god kellerbier. Dejlig frisk i smagen. Tilpas bitter. Meget grumset (For meget).

Bottle 33cl. Hazy medium golden, good frothy off-white head, mostly lasting, light lacing; aroma is fruity, bitter lemon, grapefruit, pine, cereals; taste is medium sweet and bitter, citrusy, long duration, aftertaste dry bitter, herbal notes; medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation; not really a Kellerbier, more a low fermentation IPA, pleasantly drinkable. Uses the rarely used American Athanum hop variety.

It’s labelled as a Kellerbier, but the taste is more that of an IPL with true presence of american hops and crisp bitterness. A very nice and refreshing brew!

Bottle: Golden, hazy, small stable off-white foamy layer with a lttle lace; mild nutty-caramelly nose with a very distinctive tannic-hoppy background; moderate to solid bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied and quite soft; dryish herbal and grapefruity finish with a mild malty counterpart. Good, a kind of bottom-fermented Pale Ale…
