2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
330 ml bottle bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long.
Clear Cola blackish brown colour; Razor-thin head and residual soapy off-white foam which faded in 10 seconds; Small sticky lacing with notable very small carbonation; Quite fragrant sweet aroma of roasted dark malt, with cane sugar, caramel, toffee, light vanilla, light creamed coffee, light soya sauce and light grass; Mid to light sweet taste of roasted malt, with expressive roasted coffee beans, nuts, Cola, light tartness, light caramel, very faint dark fruits, light lime and light grassy hops; Light body, watery palate; Mouth feel is very thin and watery, close to a Schwarzbier than a Stout or Porter. Light roasted maltyness, good nutty taste, the Kenyan coffee shines through with good roasty bean taste. Sweetness is mostly on nose and fairly thin on palate, More Cola than caramel-toffee. Interesting… Hoppiness is light grass nose, light lime and quite grassy hops on taste. Very low bitterness, mostly nutty non-finish; Slightly dry after taste. Very easy to mouth.
Comments: This is neither a Stout nor even Porter because of its really watery body and rather muted and flat taste, more like a Schwarzbier to me. In that regard, its coffee and sugar aroma works better than the otherwise low-key dark beer taste. Like other “Beer Kitchen” lineups, the brewers seems to test the market water and play this one safe. While its Orange Peels and IPA work out quite nicely, this one is quite lame to bear the stout name. Even as a Schwarz, they have their hands full to fulfill its potential. Nice try, guys.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottled, 330ml from The Beer Tree, Banbury. Reddish brown with slight white head. Much thinner than expected with a very sweet note, sugary, perhaps a hint of coffee but not that much. Quite disappointing really.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at The Victoria Arms, Old Marston, Oxford 4th July 2012 whilst out morris dancing with Armaleggan Pours very dark mahogany slight head. Big on coffee and dark sugars, soft coffee aromas, in fact I like the pleasant wafts of coffee. Soft carbonation, a little bit thin otherwise I would have to say it’s pretty good.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours dark brown body with a small beige head. Strange fruity aroma with a taste which is the normal stout taste (coffee and chocolate). Thin body, too thin to be a stout. Nice carbonation. A refreshing beer

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
500ml bottle (Opus K, Lohja)
Dark reddy brown, tight beige head. Mild coffee cake aroma. Tons of esters in the retronasals, quit a range, and quite a mess. Some banana and apple. Not a heavy palate, but not thin either. Pleasant carbonation. Roast more beany than coffee-ish. Quite dry in places, but never so roasty that it becomes ashy. Quite understated, but alas a bit dead, so doesn’t hit the classic mild stout button.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours dark copper with a high head. Aroma brown sugar, malts. The bottle says espresso stout yet either is barely noticeable. More like an ale.

33 cl bottle @ O’hara’s Freehouse.
Rated on 20120225.
Pours dark ruby red colour with medium head. Aroma of ripe fruits,
grass, mild espresso. Chocolate notes and malts. Flavor of fruits, mild
coffee and malts. Way too thin and fruity for a stout.
