Bomber generously thanks to ditmier. Pours a dark black color with a medium light brown head. The aroma is heavy piny hops, juicy and powerful. Wow! The flavor is similar; loads of bitter hops, fresh and tasty. Some rich milky coffee and malts balance it out. Very interesting and rich. Very nice, I was skeptical of a IIPA turned Impy but it is very nice.

Bottle: jet black with a tan head. Hops definitely abound in the aroma with some caramel in the end. Frothy malty flavors with mild hops traveling thru the flavors. A good solid bitter aftertaste. This is not one that you drink quickly.

Dark roasted malt, herbal/earthy hops, cocoa, coffee grinds and a hint of vanilla cap this one off. Definitely appreciated the addition of hops to the regular version which I really didn’t care for. Adds some complexity and brightness. Still, wouldn’t pursue this brew in the future. Just too many great stouts out there.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MikeyMalts (56) - Davis, California, USA - NOV 28, 2011
22oz bottle. 2010 F.H. Edition. Poured into tulip glass. Appearance: Pours a tan/light black from bottle, dark brown/black in glass. Hardly any head and no lacing. Aroma: Caramel, piney hops, sweet oats, vanilla, cereal, roasted hazelnut. Taste: Pretty sweet, chocolate, bitter hops, coffee, brown sugar, slightly "boozy." Palate: Med bodied, creamy, dry, carbonation not too high, the bitter coffee aftertaste lingers around. Overall: It’s delicious, but it has more hop character than I enjoy in my Imp. Stouts. More reminiscent of a black IPA. Worth drinking, but I wouldn’t necessarily buy again when looking for a stout.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 ksurkin (1021) - Norfolk, Virginia, USA - AUG 1, 2011
22oz bottle, 2010 edition from marina market. pours a rich cola-brown color, actually pretty light for an imperial stout, with a thin, light khaki head with solid retention and smooth rings of lace. aroma is great with heavy, raw dark chocolate, mocha, and bitter coffee backed by earthy, slightly herbal hops, pine esters, and roasted malts with hints of vanilla, licorice, and dark fruits as it warms. flavor is outstanding as well with big roasted malts, black coffee, and baker’s chocolate up front backed by notes of molasses, ash, and earth with a smooth, bitter, herbal, piney hop presence adding balance and finishing with notes of toasted toffee, dark fruits, and subtle citrus. palate is medium bodied with smooth carbonation and a lingering, bitter, roasted finish. overall, an excellent fresh hop imperial stout.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 neepsntatties (761) - Portland, Oregon, USA - MAY 26, 2011
I’ve had a few "vintages" of this but his is based on the 2010, so here goes.... colour... very dark brown with no head. Nose... very hoppy! Much more so than I would expect from an impy stout. Palate... loads of anise seed and licorice fern root with a somewhat soapy licorice character followed by dark chocolate, medium bodied coffee, roasted filberts, machiato, leather and spice.

Bottle. Pours a dark bruin body with a tan head. Nice roasted hop tones seeping form the glass reminds me of darkness up front but even hoppier. Roasted malt tones, licorice, and bitter grass and herbs. Very earth y and bitter hop tones, nice grass y chewy body with a sweeter chocolate malts quickly diminished by the roast y bitterness. A mild warming but enough hops and malt to settle it quick. Really a great offering.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 TheEpeeist (2479) - Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA - MAR 26, 2011
22 oz bottle, 2010 edition. Dark brown with a tannish melted-marshmallow looking head. Nose is mocha, club soda and hay. Medium body with a zing, getting resiny. Starts with a shot of espresso, big pine and a citrus peel bite. Consumed fresh this might have been too much. After the initial bitter blast dark chocolate and pink grapefruit. Brash and hoppy but a tad overwhelming of the base beer.
