COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed like the stout that made Ireland famous and named after Boston's most memorable mayor, this beer has a lot to live up to. Brewed with roasted and flaked barley and Kent Golding hops, this ale is smooth, rich and very dry.

Draft at Brewpub awhile back. Pours black with creamy tan head. Nose/taste of roasted chocolate malt, light coffee and flaked oats and barley. Medium body.

Should it be black with a creamy tan head? Bland, slightly roasted malt taste. Watery palate, all too common with these New England stouts. The white blanket lacing is a redeeming quality when you’re seeking solace in the glass.

On cask at the Fenway location. Arrived at the table black with a moderate light brown head that lasted through the first third of the glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of roasted malt with notes of chocolate. The flavor is predominantly roasted malt with just a hint of chocolate. Mild bitterness at the finish. On the light side of medium bodied. Solid.

1/10/2011 on tap @ Boston Beer Works (2011-483)

Clear dark red brown beer, creamy beige head, unstable, little adhesive. Aroma: mocha, sweet malts, earthy, smoke, tobacco. MF: soft to no carbon, medium body, creamy texture. Taste: sour berries, mocha, bit of cola, coffee. Aftertaste: citrus sour, coffee bitter. Misses some malty body to lift everything up a bit.

A: The beer pours almost black in color with a dense tan head. S: As usual with an Irish stout, aromas of coffee and roast with a bit of dark chocolate. Other than that, it’s a bit on the watery side and has a few notes of earthy hops. T: Very bitter, much more so than any other beer of the style that I’ve had. Heavy on the earthy hops with coffee, dark chocolate, and old coffee grounds on the palate. M: Light bodied with low carbonation. O: Aroma was way too watery but the flavor was far too bitter. And the old coffee ground flavor didn’t help.

On tap at the source in Lowell. Pours a solid black with a creamy frothy white head that sticks around forever. Smells of lightly roasted grains and a slight earthy aroma. Lackluster aroma, maybe they were going for a Guinness clone? Taste is slightly acridic with mild roasted grains and an earthy herbal taste to it. Light body medium carbonation level, slick acridic mouthfeel. I love me a good stout but this one misses on so many levels. The roast is hard to find its bitter and acridic like burnt coffee. Even Guinness would have been better.

Tap @ the Fenway location. Deep black with creamy, foamy white head. A nice roasted malt smell. Flavor of coffee, roasted malt, and light sweetness. Nice dry finish. A good example of the style but nothing you have to make a road trip for. Standard.

POurs deep brown with nice dry notes. It shows a very dry but yet full mouthfeel with a long lasting finish. A stand up stout with a long dry finish.

Draught at the Boston brewpub. Mild roasted aroma, faintly vinous. Almost black colour, red shine. Good creamy light brown head. The flavour is roasted and slightly vinous. A little watery. Thin mouthfeel.

On tap at boston beer works on canal st. Very dark brown with a big creamy head. Creamy feel. Nice malty aroma. Taste is a little lacking. Some burnt coffee and malts. It grew on me. A good beer but not my favorite.
