tap at Canal St. location - Pours very dark brown with an aroma of coffee and chocolate accented roast malt. As the name would suggest, this brew has high bitterness for a porter. It’s roasty with coffee notes and a touch of citrus. Good brew.

Strong roasted aroma with a distinct hop presence for contrast. Taste of strong, bitter old coffee. Thick, sludgy consistency. Bitter enough for me to tell the missus that it the new black india style. Thanks, ratebeer.

On draught at the Fenway location. Pours black with a thin-moderate light brown head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left a coating of foam with each sip until the very end. Pleasant aroma of resinous pine with some notes of roasted malt. The flavor is a more balanced combination of roasted malt and pine with the pine bringing home a solid bitter finish that lingers for about 10-15 seconds beyond the swallow. On the fuller side of medium bodied. Very enjoyable.

On draft at the brewpub, Salem location. First beer I’ve tried with this appellation. Roasty, coffeeish aroma, charry malts with notes of cocoa, faint burnt sugar sweetness, brown sugar and cream. Opaque black color, head is diminished, mostly lasting, though. Flavor is pretty much straight forward Porter, lots of roast, faint sweetness, some moderate hop bitterness, and citric, fruity hop flavors appearing at the finish. The "India Pale" part comes only at the very end, in other words. Medium level of carbonation, medium body, pretty dry overall. Not bad.

1/10/2011 on tap @ Boston Beer Works (2011-481)

Dark brown cloudy beer, small light beige head, bit stable, non adhesive. Aroma: pineapple, passion fruits. MF: light carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity and hoppy start with hints of pineapple and passion fruit, mocha bitterness. Aftertaste: mocha, coffee, some fruitiness. Not bad, but a beer like this needs more body.

opaque dark brown beer with small light brown head and lacing. Aroma holds primarily malt. The flavor of this beer is interesting.between the big roasty malt character and the spruce/grapefruit hops, it’s quite bitter. Nice crisp mouthfeel with a dry finish.

(Rating #3678)

Draft at Fenway 2/20/09. Pours a dark black color with a very small off white head that dissipates to nothing. Nose is light chocolate with a fairly strong piney hop note. Palate is oily and smooth. Flavor is chocolate and coffee with a hop freshness and a bitter hop bite in the finish.
