Bottle from Thai supermarket. After tasting the horrible Beerlao light lager, this was a bit of a positive surprise. Pours a deep mahogany body with a big cloudy off-white head. Nose is malty tones with slight hints of cardboard, without overpowering stuff like the lighter versions tend to. Taste is caramel malts, light roastiness and hints of dusty hops. Nicely balanced, despite certain flaws this is a rather OK brew from Laos. Surprisingly enough.

Pours a very nice deep red brown with a large tan head. Aroma of sweet caramel and light fruit. Flavor of light roasted malts, light chocolate, and tea. Not good, but also not too bad.

Pretty much just a pale lager that’s not...pale...Light notes of caramel and pale malts. Grainy and bready on the nose and taste. Quite drinkable and different but not the best by any means.

Stew41 (1933) - Phuket, THAILAND - JUL 4, 2011
UPDATED: MAY 10, 2016 Continues to drink well and weighs in at a surprisingly strong 6.5%. Good roasty character with a layer of chocolate although the malt a little less than I remember. I can ’feel’the pale lager base but there’s no denying a very honest adherence to a Schwarzbier style. The abv helps fill the palate out. (55tbt in Phuket supermarkets)

Dark brown-red colored, little yellow head. Caramelly and chocolaty, sweet aroma with some biting grainy-perfumy notes. Medium bodied. Flavor is more on roasted and dry side, some dark chocolate here as well. Dark chocolate lasts in somehow bitter aftertaste, some wort tone here as well.

Chevy Chase WIne and Liquors 330ml ($2ish): Pours a darkish amber color with a white head. Aroma is not very powerful, but there is some caramel lodged in there. The beer itself is kind of sweet, but still manageable. Easy drinking for sure, perhaps also because it is lacking in complexity. Some of those macro ugly flavors, but also a touch of hops here and there. Not a bad beer, if not the most inspired.

I poured an 11.2oz bottle into a tumbler.

Appearance: Straight brown, mostly opaque but some transparency to it. Large sediment chunks floating throughout the body. Forms a small, tan, foamy head with low retention and lacing.

Smell: Slightly sweet notes of iced coffee and toffee, but with a strong generic lager backbone aroma.

Taste: For a lager from a country not associated with quality beer, Beerlao Dark Lager is impressive by just how flavorful it is. The beer is remarkable sweet with flavors of coffee ice cream, toasted malts and a pleasant aftertaste. I’ve never encountered an American dark lager with this much flavor, so to get this kind of palate from Laos is very surprising (and pleasantly so).

The palate here isn’t as thick and sticky as a stout, nor is it as roasted-tasting, as it does have the thinner, lighter taste of a lager. The coffee-like flavor incorporates slight bitterness, but complemented by a very tasty confectionary sweetness of sugar, cream and toffee.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to the letter - neither thick nor thin. Not fizzy, either. Residual sweet flavors too.

Drinkability: The bottle indicates this beer weighs in at 6.4% ABV, but it definitely do not drink as such. The alcohol probably accounts for the robustness, but has no effect on the drinkability. The medium mouthfeel and low carbonation make for an utterly smooth lager. The sweet, flavorful palate makes it something of a liquid dessert, although I’d imagine it would pair well with authentic Laotian food.

Overall, this is a diamond in the rough and a hidden gems of beer stores everywhere. Give it a try and you’ll be see what I mean.

Bottle, from trade with Papsoe. It looks nice in the glass, a dark copper colored body and a dense, off-white to light beige head. Some dried fruits in the aroma, else quite weak. Wort and caramel too. Not very interesting and pleasant, not really foul either. The flavor is very similar, semi-sweet and with a decent bitterness towards the end. Medium body and pleasant carbonation. Overall, not a beer tempting to repeat, but I guess I could drink a few if I were in Laos. 110516
