Bottle. Dark copper pour. Short tan head. Um, this isn’t a schwarzbier. More an American Dark Lager. I’ll switch it afterward. Aroma is sweet malt and caramel. Hints of grain. Taste is caramel, sweet malts, and light cereal grains. Body is light-medium and slightly chewy with moderate carbonation. End is more caramel, sweet malts, and light cereal grains. Not too bad.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Clear brown appearance; actually, it was exactly the same color as the bottle itself. Muted, sweet, caramel malt aroma that turned vegetal as it warmed. Taste of maple syrup over rice. Light-to-medium bodied mouthfeel with good carbonation. Sticky sweet finish.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
A passable dark lager that pairs well with spicy laotian food. Not much to recommend it outside of Laos, inside of Laos it’s nice to have a dark option.

3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beerlao Dark is a very clear brown lager with a fluffy off white head that leaves nice lacing. It has a faint aroma of grain and vegetables, with a hint of sweet and a hint of sour. It has a smooth medium body with a watery finish. It tastes slightly sweet, like dark malt extract, with no roastiness, really. There’s a touch of chocolate and caramel and maybe squash or yams. It’s relatively inoffensive.

2.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
As always tasting beer after a day spent on various long haul busses, tuk tuks and boats it was the best beer I’ve ever had. On reflection it’s passable darkish ale and a wonderful relief from the sea of fizzy lager to the south. Pours like a flat coke, slight biscuit taste, wee bit of hops and sweetness

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
not too much on the dark front. the aroma is mostly weak, taste is a little soapy, with some rice background that is common in Asian made beers. drinkable

1.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20
The aroma is a bit skunked with a little bit of caramel malt, chocolate, nuts, and a touch of grassy hops. The appearance is cola brown with a small head. The flavor is sweet and bitter but a lot like the aroma and also skunked. The palate is thin. Overall this is not that good and hardly a schwarzbier.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: MAY 11, 2009 Pours brown cola color and transparent. Better than regular Beer Lao with some caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, and dark/rye bread. Hardly a great schwartzbier, but an excellent alternative to the abundance of light lagers in Asia.
