courtesy of Philipp and Thomas - pours a clear brown beer under a solid and long lasting pale beige foam; very buttery aroma with notes of caramel and cola; sweet and medium-bodied; initially velvety mouthfeel but with a late earthy tartness; dry aftertaste of butterscotch and vegetables - cloying and unpleasant

You never expect much from these southeast Asian breweries, but this one isn’t bad. Not an american style dark lager though, more of a European style, not a dunkel though.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2010 Beerlao Dark is near and dear to my heart. Too bad it is impossible to find in the states. 330 mL bottle (the only thing it comes in as far as I know). Pours a clear, dark red with a very thin off-white head. Okay lacing. Aroma is slightly skunked with some lighted roasted malt, honey, and caramel. Very unpredictable and can range from a skunked soy sauce to a great, chocolatey dark beer. Very smooth and light on the palate. Lots of rice in the background and a bit of balancing hops. Alcohol is not entirely masked but is not warming. Overall, the best beer you will find in SE Asia.

Bottle sample at a Southeast Asian alcohol tasting at Nimrod’s place. Thanks Nimrod. Clear deep amber with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, a bit of metal, a bit of caramel and light toastiness. Sweetish caramelly flavor with light toasty notes and a drier finish. Medium-bodied. Pretty drinkable.

Bottle courtesy of beastiefan2k. Amber coloured pour with a smell that can only be described as "macro". Pale malt with a touch of light nuttiness. Lightly honeyish. It’s drinkable, but it’s not good.
