bradlyc77 (226) - Sebastopol, California, USA - MAY 7, 2009
UPDATED: MAY 11, 2009 Pours brown cola color and transparent. Better than regular Beer Lao with some caramel, chocolate, roasted malt, and dark/rye bread. Hardly a great schwartzbier, but an excellent alternative to the abundance of light lagers in Asia.

Bottle at pub in Kunming. Actually pretty good with some caramel malts and small roasted flavor going on. Refreshing aswell.

Pours a bright amber with a thick off white head...really nice lacing and retention. Aroma has sweet maltiness and a dry mapley/leafy note. Flavor follows suit but is a bit stale and metallic. Mouthfeel is full and silky and the finish is dry and earthy/sweet malty. This is actually very close to being very good!

12 oz. bottle. It pours a clear amber color with a disappearing off white head. The aroma is rather sweet with some caramel, nuts and corn. The corn stands out unfortunately. Smells a bit overly sweet too. The flavor is not too bad with more caramel and corn. It’s pretty sugary sweet actually. Lighter notes of bread and nuts with hints of sulfery lager yeast. Prickly carbonation. I can see how this would go well with some spicy Lao cuisine, but I don’t think I would order this again if I had other options.

Dark lager. Bright but kind of skunky. Copper pour with eggy head. Grainy Metallic finish. Serve as cold as humanly possible.

Bottle, brought back from Lao by TvM and shared at game night. Colour of long-steeped Red Rose tea, mediocre head that vanishes before two minutes pass. Slightly sour grains, weak caramel, metal. Thank you Tyler for Lao tick #2-- I will now wash my mouth out with a beer.

330ml bottle (thanks Aresh). Deep caramel color. Small size, bubbly yellow head, stays. Minerals, malty, sweetish , caramels, faint sour notes in aroma. Sweet, caramel, hop extract in taste. Faint nutty aftertaste.

330ml bottle - Thanks Aresh!
On pouring, quite a bit of haminess, but in the glass it’s just a bland dark lager, probably only worth 3. Actually, only 2, as it’s a bit like minerally water. Looks a nice rich red, small off-white head. Taste is a horror, nasty minerals. Finish is bitter and minerally, drying. Actually this is pretty nasty, it’s just in the horror zone. I had hoped this would be a palate cleanser, but it’s horribly acidic!

Grassy aroma, extremely sweet taste. Bit flat aswell. Atleast the bottle and beer looks decent.

Bottles in Laos in the past. Most recently a bottle in Bangkok restaurant. Pours dark reddish brown. Clear. No head. Aroma is malts and toffee. Smooth malty taste. Barley and maybe even some yeast. Quite good but watery.

Poured from bottle to glass. Dark copper brown hue with tan head that settled. Aroma is bready, grain, cereal, toffee, caramel. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is sweet with a clean finish. Overall this beer is ok.
