This is brewed with a variety of specialty hops that are hard to find with today’s shortages, including the evasive Simcoe. This beer is clean, brisk and lighter than some with just the right amount of residual hops. The rye adds a spicyness to its malt flavor. Awesome!

November 13th, 2013 - I’m seeing Rye IPAs here and there, and I like what they do. The rusty, dry touch hugs the hop bitterness well, but balance is still key. That means quality varies. Belching Beaver’s interpretation of the style, however, is quite lovely. The aroma is traditionally hoppy, but circled by fruity scents like sweet, ripe pineapple, orange, and flowers. The flavor is similarly on the sweeter side. Meanwhile, the palate is smooth, almost flat, delivering a slow, serpentine brew. The touch of rye doesn’t manifest as rye, though it might be playing with the other flavors in subtler ways. Even so, this is a lovely drink, even though the unctuous mouthfeel is, at first, somewhat unexpected.

UPDATED: AUG 22, 2015 Enticing tropical fruit citrus pine aroma in a hazy light amber pour. Delicious hop forward balance with a tangy spicy body and sustained spicy bitter finish.

Draft at the North Park tasting room. Pours golden orange with a white head. Fruity hoppy base, mild rye notes, moderate bitterness, and a pithy citric hoppy finish. Solid.

Has a malty and earthy flavor. Dirt. Tropical and citrus. Good. Rye for sure dominates but in a good way. Had this poured from tap at Belching Beaver in San Diego.

Nce rye woody nose. But a little off. Caine phenolics. Flavor is way better, good bitterness. Overall a decent brew with good lacing and nice carbonation.

Pours a clean light orange color with a pine aroma. Taste is citrus, mixed with light hops, leaving a light bitterness in the aftertaste. A minor rye flavor. This beer is clean and crisp, with a light IPA flavor and complexity.
