3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
DATE TASTED: February 13, 2016... GLASSWARE: Samuel Smith pint... OCCASION: a cold day calls for a warming stout... APPEARANCE: stout-black body begins with a brown single-finger head and finishes as a thin halo... AROMA: warm biscuit and chocolate take the lead, with lactic elements wafting... some peat, smoke and sweet confectioner’s sugars...also, some bourbon hints of vanilla... PALATE: a relatively smooth draw with a late fizziness...the slight oiliness contributes to a lingering aftertaste that again suggests whiskey mash...plenty drinkable, sidestepping a stout’s potential weightiness... TASTE: a sea saltiness pervades an experience that includes smoky peat, vegetable, dough and chocolate make for a multifaceted profile... OVERALL: BIG shout-out to Uncle Mark for his rerouting yet another Beer of the Month selection,,,this evokes enough different aspects that it rises above the average winter mix-pack variety... strong enough to stand alone, with enough alcohol to be engaging...

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark charcoal colored beer with a thin late forming dark beige head. Nose of candied almonds, semi-sweet chocolate, and marzipan. Flavor is less complex with bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and roasted grain finished with a moderate bitterness that subsides quickly. Pretty good stout.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Beer of month club offering. Pours black with light brown head. Nose of roasted malt and coffee. Taste is of deep roasted malts and burnt coffee. Pretty good. Maybe burnt aftertaste lingers a little too much.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours black with a thick, foamy, cappuccino-looking head that stays forever. Nice lacing. Nose is bready with slight coffee and chocolate notes. Maybe a hint of vanilla. Taste is reasonably well-balanced. Nice bitter hop notes over a light chocolate malt backbone. Medium body. Moderately soft carbonation. Nice brew. I wouldn’t turn one down.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a nice looking black color with a small half fingered white to off white foamy head that dissipated within less than a minute and left a fairly decent spider web lacing.
The smell had a fair amount of roasty coffee notes over coating a nice graininess (oatmeal, I guess). There’s a fairly nice vanilla aroma invading as it warms.
The taste was mainly roasty and sweet through the coffee and graininess to the vanilla and slight chocolate that ends up slightly coming in as it warms.
On the palate, this sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionable quality about it. The carbonation seemed appropriate for the style and worthy to me.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good Oatmeal Stout, though it seemed grainier on the nose than just oatmeal.
