3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 17, 2015 Jandrain saison brewed for Belga Corner in Brazil, from a 75 cl bottle. Medium, creamy, egg-white head, colour a misty straw yellow blonde. Estery and fairly strong aroma of sour yoghurt, green apple, raw rhubarb, vanilla, unripe peach, straw, gooseberries, starfruit, banana, pineapple, white pepper, sourdough, candied lemon, cava, sorrel, freshly cut grass, old dry sherry, hint of cloves. Taste begins vividly fruity, lots of citrus (lime?), pineapple and sour berries, with a gentle yet subtle sweetness to it; strong and tingling carbonation further reinforcing the acidity, but remaining in place. Middle phase retains the same acidity but it feels quite natural (intended) here, not resulting from bacterial infection; underneath there is a smooth, slightly bready but in all fairly dry malt sweetishness and more and more spicy yeasty impressions come up. Finish continues the spicy yeastiness along with the drying acidity, perhaps a bit too much, some subtle remains of lingering malt sweetishness and herbal hops, as well as a touch of warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol, restraining itself just enough not to become obnoxious. In all: the acetaldehyde factor is fairly strong here and the ’wild’ sourness could be a little less pronounced for this particular style, but at the same time this beer manages to remain subtle and refreshing. Not bad at all for a blonde intended as a saison (or, as the Americans say, ’farmhouse ale’), but I assume this may be quite a shock to the average Brazilian palate...

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle. Light golden, hazy, small to average and mostly diminishing head. Light to moderate, malty - lightly wheaty and lightly sweetish aroma, light sourness and faint barnyard, light floral fruitiness with light spiciness (coriander). Body is light to medium, malty - lightly wheaty and lightly sweetish flavor, light citrus and spiciness, light hoppyness. Finish is short to average, malty - lightly wheat and lightly sweetish, light citrus and spiciness with light herbal hoppyness. Way too thin saison. Due to thin body in the finish spiciness gets slightly sharp.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
75cl bottle kindly procured by Belgian turf king tderoeck, merci! No bb, very basic label catering to Art Nouveau minimalist expecations. - Pours like dirty unfiltered apple juice. Nose of offish apple juice, Tapetenkleister/behanglijm, dull esters - much improved once the yeast dregs are evenly poured among 2 tasting glasses: enter a fresher layer of wild yeast components, untreated orchard fruit peel, some tartness. Taste also varies greatly depending on whether yeast dregs are poured or not: without, it is a very dull, ponderous wheat ale with tired noted of honey, stale lemomande and apple sauce - not at all a joy to drink; with the yeast, it comes to life with a more of a saison-like complexity, like a baby Fantome: still extremely murky and with citrus fruit notes (old lemon peel particularly, verging on pickled grapefruit) blurrily defined at best and a strange hop bitterness that wasn’t there before and would be odd coming only from the yeast. One of the less convincing and confusing Jandrain efforts so far - as such presenting one of the more typically muddled Belgian saison recipes.

75 cl. bottle sampled. Procured from Willems & Zoon. Hazy orange, little head. Nose is metallic, orange, sweet bread, lots of yeast, light saison touch, sweet sugary. Tastes of sweet apple, bitter grain, grass, lots of yeast, sweet sugar, light chalk. Thicker yeast body. Pretty dull but nothing wrong with it, it is just quite dull.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml bottle. Pours a clear yellow colour with a foamy white head. Aroma of floral hops, citrus and some grassy notes. Flavour is very citrusy with some floral notes, herbs, grainy malts and orange pith. Light bodied and lively carbonation. Very citrusy, but unfortunately too thin.
