80 Shilling is Belhaven’s classic, hand-pulled, cask-conditioned ale - just like great great great grandpa would have had. It has a classic red appearance in the glass, rich and smooth. An Austrian Emperor once described 80/- as ’the burgundy of Scotland’. Not sure how many he’d had, but the man clearly had taste.

On cask at The Heriot-Watt Beer Festival. Pours a light brown colour. Aroma of musty yeast and chocolate. Similar flavours with an oily mouth-feel. Not my thing.

Cask at The Wharf. An aroma of plastic, malt, dirty shirts and weak rotten. A flavor of malt, bread, sweets and weak prunes.

First tasted this at the Ardenlee Hotel, Seamill in June 1983. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear copper in colour with a thick creamy head. Pleasant aroma of sweet toffee and biscuit notes along with a yeasty boiled egg note. Creamy seductive mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts give a robust malt flavour full of depth with maltloaf, caramel, burnt shortbread and raisin fruit. Slight presence of dusty hop flowers in the aftertaste but malt prevails in the sweet finish with toffee coming through. A cracking example of a traditional Scottish 80/ and well recommended as a session beer.

One of the 18 beers I got from Beers of Europe. This was a brewery I’d never heard of but was quite impressed with this. Dark amber in colour, a thick head that disappeared after a bit. Aroma is sweet with large hints of caramel. Begins sharp, rises in bitterness and ends quite nicely. Hints of walrut possibly in there. Easy to drink, one I’d happily have again.

Tasted at Southampton Beer Festival 2006 Barley aroma. Mid ruby brown with a sweet and hoppy taste. Malty aftertaste which becomes sweeter down the glass.

Kaledonia Pub, Budapest.

Cask @ Ma Camerons, Aberdeen. Sour Toffee apple aroma. Clear medium brown colour with good head. Sour vegetable grassy flavour. Bitter aftertaste. I wonder if it had gone off.

Dark copper colour with a thick off white head. Very malty aroma. Nice and malty fairly smooth could do with a bit more body.

Nice coppery ale, smooth and creamy, malted, caramel and buttered toast. There are notes of walnut, apple, citrus fruit and a clear bitter final.
