Belhaven Black Scottish Stout really is something completely different. Bursting with roast coffee and chocolate flavours, this is a truly genuine and premium pint. Brewed using pure Scottish water and a unique blend of Scottish triple malts sourced from the finest locally grown barley.

Can. A red-brown beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and bread. The flavor is roasted malt, bread, and a bit of wood, leading to a dry roasted finish.

On tap at Taco Mac. Deep walnut, almost black with thin tan cap and significant lacing. Aroma is roast and chocolate. Semi sweet taste which is mostly roasted malt, some bitter chocolate comes through with coffee notes - taste is smooth, a hint of hop bitterness to finish. Body is lighter than I would have liked, although there is some creaminess to it. It’s a fair beer, smooth drinking, but not very complex and a little too thin for my taste.

Draught in Pazzeria, Milan, carbo-nitro
Black color with creamy beige head. Nice aroma, some roasted malt, caramel, fudge. Low carbonation; Mild flavor of dark malts, not too dry, and moderate chocolate; ordinary bitterness. Light final, because of the nitro.

I had pretty low expectations for this one but was pleasantly surprised. +++ Sampled from a 16 oz can this beer poured a black color with a large creamy dark beige head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was a nicely complex mix of roasty, toasty and almost smoky with notes of vanilla, cream, wood and hickory. The flavor was sweetish and roasty with notes of smoke, bacon and floral hops. Long roasty bacon finish. Moderately full bodied and smooth. Pleasant.

Bottle from Matkroken Natland, Bergen. Pours a near-black deep brown body with a red hue and a medium, short-lived white head. Aroma is sweet chocolate, caramel and hints of grains, toffee and licorice. Scottish stout indeed? Taste is mellow brown-and-crystal malt sweetness, hints of leather, smoke biscuits and bread crumbs. Medium to thin body, soft to medium carbonation. While not being all that impressive as a regular stout, I think the term "Scottish stout" has something going for it - this is a mellow, caramel-infused black beer with hints of smoke. Pretty much just what I’d brewed myself if I aimed at such a category, so I give some props for that. :-)

500ml can. Very dark brown color. Almost black. Tiny brown head. For a stout I’d say flat. Metallic, caramel, sugars in aroma. Very very faint coffee. Nice malty, medium roast, grainy flavor. Bit ashy butter in aftertaste. Weak and watery body. Lack of depth. Macrostout.

500ml can. Black, medium head of creamy off-white nitrogen foam. Weak roast and some vanilla, some vague chocolate hints. Taste is pretty thin with more weak roasty malt-coffee notes, some rasty bitterness, dryness and vanilla in the finish. Thin body, dry mouthfeel, smooth carbonation. Just too thin and watery.
