Reviewed on Xmas Eve. Not much aroma on the nose apart from hops and sweet malts. Pours nut brown with a thin off white head. The taste is bitter hops, caramel, dark fruits, sweet malt and toast. The body is quite thin with no lacing left on the glass and the carbonation is limited. Overall decent enough but nothing very special.

Bottle to lament (but respect) the fact that Scotland has voted no to independence. Pours clear copper brown with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of malt, caramel, and hops, with touches of yeast. Bitter flavour of hops, with sweet notes of malt, caramel and fruit. Estery and bitter afteraste. Easily drinkable and not as bitter as a bitter Bitter. Okay but nothing extraordinary.

This isn’t a bad ale and maybe I’m being to harsh, but after drinking the more complex 80 schilling I found this to be very boring. I’m sure had I done it the other way around, I wouldn’t be so tough. Really should try the 80 schilling instead though.

Clear 500ml bottle: poured into a UK pint sleeve on 27th Nov 13. Looked good: nice mahogany reddy brown body with a thin but full tanned covering. Clean and clear with carbonation bubbles rising throughout the tasting. Sweet malts ruled the nose and taste: treacle, toffee and caramel coming through in that order. The body isn’t thin, but it hasn’t got the depth to carry the sweetness very well, seems a little unbalanced and one dimensional because of that. OK, promises so much in looks and smell, but lacks a hop backbone and oomph.
