bottle, US export version
Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and weíve been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.

Bottle pour. Pours a dark copper with a funky malt aroma. Not much head. Overall a drinkable beer. Decent malt flavor. Not bad

Almost skunky aroma like an English bitters. Dark malty color. Woah! What flavor. Almost tastes like the malt has been sprouted. Tiny skunkiness but not overwhelming. Round flavor. Tastes vaguely fungal, but in a good way, like a very clean dwarfs garden herbs.

2014-08-01. Crisp dark amber body with a small beige head. 3+ Aroma is mild, lightly woody and toasty malt notes. Muted overall. Flavour is sweetly malty, toasty malt, lightly bitter, mild earthy undertones. Average bodied palate, moderate carbonation. Okay, pretty mild overall. Bottle of 5.2% version courtesy of GregClow

Bottle, clear glass. Nose initially skunky, despite expectations of that not being possible, and plastic-heavy, as when yeast is washed from a bucket with acidic solution. Otherwise spicy malt, earthy, toffee, sweet. Body a dark amber, tawny with a dense off-white head, rocks, lace. Medium body watery at times but with tumbling thin malt and light bitterness, semi-dry, good malt character all around, lightly spice and earthy hops prickling here and there. Very very faint smoke in behind the earth, touch of scorch. Fruitiness is kept to a bare minimum, this one more about combinations of roast and kilning, and notions of staleness and faint astringency. Basic, somewhat straightforward, and still fun to drink.

If this wasnít so expensive it would be my "go to" beer. Itís not the most flavorful beer, but there is nothing overpowering about any of the flavors. Itís not too hoppy, not too malty, not too bland - just a good beer to go to when nothing jumps out at you.

Bottle, from Tesco, Kirkwall. Amber gold, thin but lasting white head and moderate condition. Biscuits and caramel with a hint of peppery spiciness in the nose. Full bodied and malty sweet in the mouth with hints of burnt toast and a gentle earthy hop bitterness, lingering toffee sweetness and peppery hop bitterness in the finish.
