Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and we’ve been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.

Pours a very pretty clear copper color. One to two fingers beige head. Good lacing, good retention.

Aroma is very malty but not so biscuity. Pretty nutty nose. Also there’s some sort of fruit, or maybe it’s floral hops.

Taste is a little bland. Sweet and malty, like in the marzen category. But then it’s just nutty enough to observe the nuttiness. It is very smooth. Well balanced, it seems like it should be a little bitter, but it’s not.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. There’s a soft carbonation that I find interesting. Very smooth and balanced. Easy drinking, but I dunno about how sessionable it would be.

Overall, I like it. It’s not amazing. One to enjoy while winding down. Maybe a touch more carbonation would be good. I’d drink it, buy it again.

Draft pint at Cicero’s, served on nitro gas. On nitro, guys!!! Absolutely gorgeous appearance: crystal-clear reddish amber with compact, sudsy peach foam, everlasting with nice lacing left behind. Low but pleasant aroma, fuller flavour, both aroma and flavour dominated by complex malt sweetness, just a faint bitter balance of Fuggly UK type hops (earthy, floral). Grainy, biscuity, bready, caramel, toffee, molasses. Ripe fruit esters, hint of black pepper phenol. Low carbonation. Smooth, smooth, smooth mouthfeel, medium-full bodied and round, super malty but finishes surprisingly dry. No harshness nor heat hor astringency whatsoever, smooth as can be to the very end. Delicious.

Bottle from Market Street Wine Shop Downtown. Pours clear brown with a small off-white head. Smells of wet dog, glue, caramel malts. Taste is roasted nuts, caramel, light raisin. OK, but not creative.

I like this. A little sweetness, some of that cask mouthfeel. Been awhile since I had one of these. Decent.

Draught can. Sets up nicely. A bit of off funky spice and heavier malt. Get the creaminess from the nitro widget. Meh, not good couldn’t finish.

Pours a clear mahogany brown with a frothy off white head. Malty aroma of raisins and plum. Predominantly malt at the start it quickly gives way to a hop presence which dries the palate more so than adding bitterness. Well balanced. A classic! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma: relatively medium heavy caramel and an underscore of butterscotch, the aroma is pretty sweet. Appearance: copper color with a white sliver of head. Taste: definitely malt-centric and a touch on the sweeter side. Hops are there only offering support. Palate: Medium-body, Kind of creamy. Moderately sweet aftertaste

Bottle split two ways. Copper pour with a frothy head. Notes of caramel, hazelnuts, vanilla, some syrup, honey and sweet toasted malts.

330 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, ivory head, with slight lacing, over a clear copper (SRM 14) body......nose is moderate toasted malts, with toffee/caramel notes, light plum, herbal hops, balance to the malts......taste is mildly sweet, with dried fruit notes, plum, raisin, finishing with mild herbal hop bitterness, balance to the malts.......mouth feel, light body, no alcohol. low carbonation. This is a rather light beer. It meets the style with malt dominating the hops, but it is not particularly interesting. BJCP 8/3/15/4/7
