Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and we’ve been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.

Bottle. An almost clear one, copper colored and with a small, off-white head. The aroma is quite malty, in a nice way, with some toffee and prunes. Not much hoppyness kicking in. It’s smooth, full-bodied and semi-sweet on the palate, wtih roasted notes, toffee, prunes, raisins and some bitterness in the flavor. Long finish on the malty side, with quite a lot of dried fruits. Decent indeed, but a tad boring I think. 150711

Bottle, 5.2%. Spicy and nutty aroma. Clear chestnut colour. Good stable creamy off-white head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma. Spicy hop flavour, some nut, faintly sweet. Actually a lot like a not-so-sweet hvidtøl.

Bottle from California Heights @ home. Pours a light amber color with a white head. Nose is slightly sweet with some caramel, bread, and fruity esters. A touch buttery. The flavor is nothing to write home about either. Bread, caramel, and some butter. Light fruity esters and water.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours copper with a small off-white head. Toffee aroma. Med body or nearly. Flavor is fruit and toffee. Rather clean tasting. Maybe a bit of spice after awhile. It is malty, but there’s balancing bitterness. Glad I finally did it.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2014 500ml can (Drink Shop, Tallinn)
Wooly aroma. Darm orange, widget head - splashed all over my hands as I opened the can - docking it a point for that. Mashy wooly taste, sweet. Bland and dead, but inoffensive.
Rerate: 330ml bottle (Koht, Tallinn) (5:3:5:3:10=2.6)
Same beer. This time it’s a brown bottle rather a can with a widget. Extra point just for that. Still too slimy.

Half liter clear bottle from Harris Teeter Barracks Charlottesville, opened 11/19/13. Pours a clear red-amber color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Decent head retention. Caramel and tea aromas behind a heavy mask of skunkiness. The taste is caramel malts, earthy hops, mild raisin and chocolate. Medium bodied. 50th Scottish ale!
