COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
bottle, US export version
Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and we’ve been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.

Hazy copper with white head. Aroma of citrus and feet. Taste is musty and a little bitter. Not bad.

Not good and what did I just run over? First mistake was that I mistook this US Version for the Scottish/Export Version. I guess someone in their infinite wisdom decided that sending a beer in a clear bottle across seas was a good idea. This was my second mistake as I’m sure the canned version was better. As with my previous experience with their Wee Heavy, skunkiness dominated all aromas. It disappated slightly in the glass near the end to reveal a mild malty sweetness. Color was a light copper with a small head. The palate was light without much substance, carbonation slightly below average. Again, the flavors were hard to distinguish through the aroma but traditional Scottish malts and yeast were present with carmelization and little to no hops. This one needed help.

When poured from the draught can, the aroma was subtle with hints of toasted and nutty malts and sweet bread yeast, and the appearance combined a copper color with a nitro head that builds slowly from bubbles into a pillowy, creamy off-white foam. The taste is mildly sour, slightly sweet, and a touch bitter; also, the palate combines a medium body, creamy texture, flat carbonation, and an abrupt finish.

As much as I wanted to love this ale I found it unremarkable. A bit thin, and I think that there was some deterioration due to light.

Aroma: Malty with some skunky notes. Appearance: Amber with a thin off-white head. Flavor: Smoke, dry malt and cork. Palate: light to medium bodied with mild carbonation and a dry finish. Overall: Much better than I expected seeing how this has been generally rated.

Looked like a red Guinness coming out! Taste like a scot-ale but with the head of a nitro-stout. Flavors are very euro, like a harp, but the body helps the palate. Nice overall.

l A - Pours a clear ruby copper with a 1/2 inch white head that settles down forming a nicely formed collar. S - Rich toffee and caramel malt, apricots, musty grain, skunky at first but dies out as it sits. T - Starts of with sweet toasted toffee malt. Berry fruit and apricots come around and add to the rich malt. Grassy and floral hops come in and add balance to the sweetness. Finishes crisp and clean. Aftertaste is toffee malty goodness. M - Heavy side of medium body. Rich and creamy, great carbonation. Well I didn’t expect much out of this clear bottled brew, but I quickly changed my mind after the pour. This has excellent sweet malt flavor and combination of the carbonation and hops add perfect balance. Delicious Scottish Ale! Serving type: bottle 03-03-2011

Quite a nice Scottish ale. Very smooth. Pours a beautiful red with a thick white head. Not any smell. Taste however is very creamy, and sweet, with a slight bitter finish. Had on tap at Mill Valley Beerworks. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer has a brown color with a thick creamy head. It is smooth with very little bite. A much more mellow flavor than I expected. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Head: Medium, tan, frothy. Colour: amber, brandy-like. Aroma: strong bitter hops, caramel, nutty. Taste: solid hop bitterness, a bit of caramel, some spiciness (orange peel?).
