Malty and hoppy, we at Belhaven love the classic Scottish Ale and we’ve been brewing it longer than any of the other beers we produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby colour in the glass. Magic.

UPDATED: OCT 27, 2013 Smell is remotely skunky with notes of sweet caramel. Flavor is almost similar to a porter or sweet stput. Pretty good.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours copper with a small off-white head. Toffee aroma. Med body or nearly. Flavor is fruit and toffee. Rather clean tasting. Maybe a bit of spice after awhile. It is malty, but there’s balancing bitterness. Glad I finally did it.

Very malty and sweet. It also leaves a strong salty/briny flavor on the back of the tongue. Not very good.

Bottle at Sip. BB May 2015. Clear chestnutty colour, head very light beige, retains, leaves very little lacing. Nutty on the nose, with some berry sourness, faint toffee and malts. Taste is moderately sweet with sour berry notes and herbal bitterness in the finish. Dry finish. Bubbling a lot, but not much of it felt in the mouth. Palate soft and smooth. I really did not enjoy it much...

Pours clear brown, with medium head, reduced very quickly to none. In aroma caramel, nuts and toasty notes. In taste medium sweet. Medium body, rather thin, than oily, average carbonation. Drinkable, but nothing beyond ordinary ale.

4 oz pour on draft at Pizzeria Paradiso Dupont. Clear golden brown with off-white head. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, light malt. Tastes of caramel, toffee, biscuit, malt, honey. Medium-light body with a dry finish.

Pours clear nut brown with a large white head. Smooth bready nutty malt, caramel, almost a lager roundedness and a bit of butterscotfch. It has a medium / light crisp body with snappy carbonation. The taste starts as a drier version of the aroma with more of a dry nuttiness and still plenty of butterscotch. There is also a bit of spicy hops. Nothing fancy here, but a nice easy drinking beer.

Belhaven Scottish Ale (US Version) -- What’s up with this US Version stuff? We want the beer you brew in Scotland. No detectable aroma rising from this beautiful reddish pour with a creamy white head. Taste is slightly malty but very mild. This beer is all about the mouthfeel, but that doesn’t go very far when there is no taste. It’s not a bad slug, but not real memorable.

50 cl. Immediate aroma of toffee with some skunk and metal; think this one got a bit light-struck in the clear bottle. After the skunk fades I think I detect some earthy peat, toasted pecan and a bit of dark cherry. The beer is clear and has an aged-copper hue. Loose head of rocky bubbles settles to a small ring fairly quickly. Flavor is metal and skunk on the front, turning to dark cherry, walnut and earthy toffee in the middle. Lingering aftertaste of peaty caramel and toasted nut with the bitter pith is the best part of the beer. Light-medium body is smooth and watery with low carbonation and has a reasonable balance.

330 ml bottle. Amber orange color. Small clingy beige head. Sweet buttery brown sugar malt nose. Creamy mouthfeel with a soft nutty toffee palate. Smooth juicy malt finish. Tasty and quaffable.
