500 ml bottle bought at Aeon in KCP, Kowloon City.

Clear, deep Cola blackish brown colour; Half finger head and beige foam which last for 1 minute; small sticky lacing and active carbonation; Sweet aroma of roasted malt, with milk chocolate, very light coffee, sugar, caramel, double cream, light plum and light grass; Pleasant, strong sweet taste of rich dark roast malt, with light metallic, strong liquorices, sugar, milk chocolate, creamed coffee, nuts, light sour notes, light lemon and grassy hops; Mid to light body, quite slick and slightly creamy palate; Mouth feel is rich, nutty, and quite savory dark roasted malt, accompanied by very sweet, herbal and strong liquorices, which gives out a feel of sweetened iced coffee. This is fun! Hoppiness is light grassy nose; light lemon and grass in taste which is not enough to balance the liquorices. Full-on sweet-bitter finish; Slightly dry after taste, Quite easy and very sweet to mouth.

Comments: This stout has a simple but solid foundation - very rich and roasty malt, presentable chocolaty and creamy aroma, and well-hidden strong booze - but that herbal liquorices sweetness is really strong and can be overbearing for some, and if thereís more hops to balance it out, this would be close to perfect. A solid one to enjoy if you have sweet teeth!

Bottle. Man this was a great stout. Almost black in color with a small tan head. Aroma and taste is decadent chocolate. Really nice.

Nice aroma of prunes, roasted barley, chocolate and peat as well. Short head which disappeared quickly. Itís quite well balanced - itís quite sweet which creates nice counterbalance to all "dark" notes in the beer. Carbonation is very smooth and the beer is very drinkable. Watch it though as itís quite strong and you will not notice it when sipping. Good, stable stout.

Black with creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate with some grains. Slight lightstruck, skunky smell. Taste of coffee, chocolate with some fruitness. Moderate roastiness. Medium bitterness, a bit of dark malts acidity. some background sweetness (very light). Carbonation a bit too high. Creamy on palate. Very nice stout.

The Belhaven Scottish Stout is so Scottish sounding that I half expect the bottle to be sporting a kilt with a tartan from East Lothian. But a wee something is amiss. And truth be told, itís not just the absence of a Scottish brogue from the bottle neck that makes this beer decidedly not Scottish. The characteristic flavor and aroma are missing too - the most tragic nullification of what could have been a sweet, low and tasty blend of peat, caramelized sugars and booze. Instead, the aroma is simply and unprofoundly malty, with a sweet directness that delivers the sugars, but with a curt grunt and a tangible apathy. The flavor adds another dimension, featuring notes of licorice and sassafras, giving this brew a palate with more in common with a root beer than a Scotch Ale. The palate is light like a root beer too, and while the flavor has some appealing qualities, itís bland and boring, and a far cry from what I had hoped for based on the label.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a rocky head thatís gone in a moment leaving no lacing. Aroma of heavy molasses and dark roasted malt. Taste is heavy sweet and very lightly bitter. Body is light, sticky texture, lively carbonation, hides alcohol very well and leaves you with a sticky sweet finish.
