Pint bottle- poured out an inky black with a strong wheat head. Aroma was full malt with light chocolate undertones. Taste was excellent, coffee, chocolate and malt. Suffers from a palate that was pretty thin for a stout, even if very smooth. Nice finish, with an alcohol kick. Overall, very good to excellent.

February 18th, 2012 - The Belhaven Scottish Stout is so Scottish sounding that I half expect the bottle to be sporting a kilt with a tartan from East Lothian. But a wee something is amiss. And truth be told, it’s not just the absence of a Scottish brogue from the bottle neck that makes this beer decidedly not Scottish. The characteristic flavor and aroma are missing too - the most tragic nullification of what could have been a sweet, low and tasty blend of peat, caramelized sugars and booze. Instead, the aroma is simply and unprofoundly malty, with a sweet directness that delivers the sugars, but with a curt grunt and a tangible apathy. The flavor adds another dimension, featuring notes of licorice and sassafras, giving this brew a palate with more in common with a root beer than a Scotch Ale. The palate is light like a root beer too, and while the flavor has some appealing qualities, it’s bland and boring, and a far cry from what I had hoped for based on the label.

3.5 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Black body with creamy foamy long lacing mocha tone head. Aroma is roasted malts, plums, leather, chocolate and raw cacao beans. Palate is oily, sticky flat with flat carbonation and mouthfeel. Taste is vaguely bitter and dry with roasty malts. and cacao beans. Finish is medium long, dry and maybe too sweet.

Dåse. Mørk mahogny rød med et creamy, stabilt beige skumhovede og en ristet, maltet aroma. Brød, chocolade, lakrids, cikorie mere end kaffe. Blød tekstur, vandig, let krop. Lav karbonering. Drukket den 22.4.12.

500 ml bottle at Fox and Hounds, Åbenrå. Dark brown, close to black body with a light beige head. Mild aroma of roasted malt with a hint of coffee. Flavor is pleasantly roasted dark malt, quite sweet, some biscuit, fruit and moderate bitterness. Fine body and long aftertaste. Nice, tasty and smooth.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark, almost black, with nice and stable beige head. Aroma is dominated with dark fruits, but there’s also lot of caramel and chocolate nuances. Beer is rather full-bodied with little sticky mothfeel. It has distinct roasty bitterness, which infulences drinkability in a good way. Overall it is a little bit too heavy for me, but still it is delicious and fine beer.

Deep brown to black colour. Beige creamy head. Aroma of coffey, chocolate, roast, bread. Medium to full body . Sweetish taste. Light bitter finish. Predictable beer. Or may I use the word ’boring’ to a stout?

Pours pitch black with forgettable head. Smells of roasted malt and hops. Full body, low carbonation, quite sweet and a bit alcoholic. A slight note of licorice. Not much in the finish. Heavy beer for slow tasting.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
The aroma is brown sugar, burnt caramel. The appearance is deep brown, off-white head. The flavor is burnt caramel, light roast. The finish is roasty. Creamy mouthfeel, thin in body. This may be due to the nitro (which I hate). Not good overall.
