3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 JesseM (940) - Kitchener-Waterloo, - OCT 22, 2009
500mL bottle from my lickbo. Pours a nice coppery ruby with a large off white head. The aroma has some nice sharp hoppiness to it, mild fruity esters, mild Brit malt aspects, quite nice. The flavour is enjoyable, nice biscuity caramalty presence upfront with a mild but decent bitter bite in the finish on a somewhat overly carbonated body. Creamy aftertast that I like. I want to say there’s this subtle peaty aspect underneath it all but I think I’m stretching things a little. There’s definitely some nice subtle aspects in here that I find quite pleasing. The flavours aren’t necessarily screaming out at you though I don’t believe that’s what this style is all about. When the carbonation dies down this is actually a highly enjoyable ESB and it’s much better than I was expecting from the LCBO’s long, sad line of mediocre bitters brought in as seasonals. I will actually be buying more of this.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 16, 2012
500ml Brown bottle best before Dec 2010, reviewed and drank on 03 Nov 2010. Poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard.
Looks the bussiness, lovely dark amber, clear body, with a white foaming crown on top.
The beer gives off a malty, peaty smell, rich and on the sweet side.
The taste is of a rich, semi-sweet, malty flavoured ale, it hits my idea of a Scottish Ale to a tee.
The body is full, wholesome and smooth in the mouthfeel, some might prefer a hop presence, but to me this is a very drinkable beer. I actually bought this in St Andrews, I’m glad I did.
