Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pastuerised.
A refreshing example of an India Pale Ale from the master brewers at Belhaven. The blend of Cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hop aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion. Crafted from nearly three centuries of brewing heritage at Scotland’s oldest independent brewery, this ale from Belhaven will have your taste buds tingling.

Draft at Toad in the Hole. Foggy gold with small, soapy head. Signature Scottish (Golden Promise?) honeylike malt on the nose, plus sweet floral, mint and geranium. Flavor sustains the motif of Scottishness again with the reminiscence of Golden Promise (but the beer, not the cultivar of barley this time). ISTR the bottled product being sharper and hoppier, but both are lovely.

On tap at the Austin Flying Saucer on October 24, 2009. A clear, yet cloudy pale orange color, perfumy citrus aroma, sweet on the tongue. Pine (or some other woody green) undertones. Its body is of light hops and a caramel flavor with the finish of sour fruit. I love it!

Pours a fairly clear blonde with a rocky white head. Aroma is fairly subdued with some soapiness, some caramel, some aroma... but not much. Flavor is hoppy enough that’s for sure, kind of a grassy on herbal hoppiness, but it’s more about bitterness than raw hop flavor. The beer is generally dry with the exception of a nice light honey note in there. There is a nice salty almost pilsner like maltiness to this one as well. It’s really fairly tasty.

Such a nice IPA. I haven’t enjoyed one this much from start to finish since AleSmith. And that’s saying a lot.

Look is a big and cloudy dark orange. No clarity whatsoever in the thicker spots. Big puffy head. Looks thick and substantial. Sweet aroma is more reminiscent of a white wine than a beer. Sweet white grape aroma. Pleasant, but not much like a beer. Heavy floral, wine-like scent. Truly aromatic. Has a very smoky, steamed first flavor. An ale undertone. Mildly bitter woody (tree bark) hops. Smokyness remains. Really interesting, though to me it’s more of a Rauchbier than an IPA. Medium thickness in the mouth. Wet and smooth but has a tiny sticking thickness. Ashy as it warms. It’s a loverly, sweet beer. White wine with a smoky overlay. Really nice indeed.
