Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pastuerised.
A refreshing example of an India Pale Ale from the master brewers at Belhaven. The blend of Cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hop aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion. Crafted from nearly three centuries of brewing heritage at Scotland’s oldest independent brewery, this ale from Belhaven will have your taste buds tingling.
6.1% USA export version. The Europe version is 5.3%.

Pours reddish amber, tall cream-colored head that lasts forever -- thick and oily. Aroma is fruity hops with some esters. I find it to be too sweet for me. It has a slight estery medicine-like quality that is clearly more European than American when it comes to IPAs. Personal preference I suppose.

Bottle. A solid IPA. It pours a deep amber in color. There is a ton of hops in this beer giving it a great bite. There is a citrusy note to the flavor that is delicious. The hop level is so high that if you leave it on your tongue for a moment it starts to really tingle. A great beer from a great brewery.

Draught. Dark ruby. Creamy hops in aroma and taste. Bitter, long finish with roasted almonds. One of my favourite brews.

My bottle read 6.1% (European standard I guess.) Sampled on 9/4/07 from 500ml bottle into a tumbler (all I had available.) Slightly hazy yellow. Aroma speaks highly of a malt profile. Taste also left me wondering about the hops. Left me with a gummy palate (first ever to do that.) Tons of floaties! Undertones of blueberry/raspberry with slight bitterness. Not much to say about head or lacing. Drinkablilty is seriously dampened by the conditioning, way too much bloating effect for me. To me this is a niche brew; I will not try again.

clear dark yellow, dense white head, solid lace, light floral hop aroma, bitter hop flavor with just a touch of sweetness to back it up, long bitter finish, not much else going on, some carmel backbone eventually shows up

hops have faded a bit letting the malt sweetness come through

(Tap at the Rover, Göteborg) Golden color, white head. Hoppy, citric, fruity aroma, grapefruit and with some malty toffee notes. Nice hoppy, fruity flavor withgrassy and metallic notes. Very nice hoppy bitter finish.

Yellow golden, small tight head. This example perhaps slightly stale. Reasonable bitterness and nice hop charactistics.

Pours a clear amber with a thinm white head that dissapates quickly and leaves only a ring around the glass and some floating islands. Aroma is very nice, sweet with a hint of molases or maple syrup, with a definate spicy hop aroma afterwards. Flavor is similarly sweet, but not as much as the aroma. Very dry with a nice subtle hop bitterness, a little higher on the IBUs than the usual English IPA. Carbonation is moderatley high as you may expect to find in an IPA. A wonderful English IPA.
