Commercial Description:
Bottle: Pastuerised.
A refreshing example of an India Pale Ale from the master brewers at Belhaven. The blend of Cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hop aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion. Crafted from nearly three centuries of brewing heritage at Scotland’s oldest independent brewery, this ale from Belhaven will have your taste buds tingling.

Reviewed on: 08-11-2006 Serving type: bottle bought a bottle after reading some decent reviews. I poured this one into a tulip glass and it had a very nice orange-brown color. Little flecks in the beer reminded me of "floaties"; not a good start. The smell was weird and I could not quite place it. The taste was so bad, like the last reviewer said it was medicinal. It reminded me of an old shoe with the sole lit on fire and melted asphalt poured on top. One of only two beers I have ever poured down the drain. I stupidly purchased two bottles so now how do I get rid of the other?

Pours perfect gold with lots of small sorta dark particulate, and a tall off white-straw colored super sudsy head that leaves a really nice lacing. Aroma is herbal and citrus hops, a nice amount of toast, and a nice sweet grainy malt. Flavor is interesting...sweet grainy malt, a hint of caramel...though very little for an IPA or APA, straw, maybe it’s the power of suggestion but I notice a very sweet thistle like floral note, hops are mostly floral and herbal with just a hint of citrus. This beer doesn’t really fit the IPA or APA style very well, whichever it may be technically. Hop profile is very weak to be either. Honestly I am not the most experienced here but it tastes like a weak Marzen with some APA hops thrown in. That being said...it’s not that bad just terrible false advertising.

On tap at Mahars. Straw colored, with a nice head. I’ve never had such a smokey flavored beer, smoke was there more than the hops. Very good stuff.

Bottle. Clear pale gold with insufficient white head. Good citrus hop aroma, oranges. Weird-ass vegetable funk and hop taste. infecto flavor? Odd but drinkable. Not enjoyable though detect the hops aren’t bad, adds up to a stinky beer. Quite possibly not fresh, hard to be sure.

(Bottle). Copper color with light cloudiness. Medium off white head which is mostly diminishing. Strong hop/citrus aroma and flavor, with light alcohol. Avg duration. Light bitter finish. Slick texture. Soft carbonation. Fair lacing.

[bottle] Looks nice- clear amber color, dense head that dissolves quickly to a ring. Aroma is pretty aromatic- hops, slighty soapy pine. Flavors are quite complex. Moderate hops up front, then malty goodness- finally, a light smokey finish. A decent IPA.

Draught @ Gingerman. Yeah, it’s hoppy but it’s also got that familiar gross English beer taste that I hate. You know the one that makes you think the beer was brewed with muddy water. As you may have guessed, I didn’t like this one.
