tuevo (13), Jyväskylä, Finland Sep 21, 2008 Appearance is deep red with a thin and light head. Very sweet aroma of caramel and cream. Sweet aroma of caramel malts, also some coffee. Medium body with low carbonation. Very sweet and easy beer - one of my favorites for a dessert. matt7215 (943), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Sep 20, 2008 500 ml bottle from the LCBO. pours deep amber with a tan head that lasts all the way down the glass. muted malt aromas that are overly sweet. good malt flavours that are seemingly a cross between a ESA and a Scotch Ale. good palate for a one dimentional malt bomb. no trace of the abv, but not stunning good in any other aspect. a solid ESA. tinde (3), Tampere, Finland does not count Sep 20, 2008 500 ml bottle. Medium body with long finish. Malty flavour. Aromas of raisin and bread. PaulHegedus (459), Georgetown, Ontario, Canada Sep 19, 2008 Bottle, September 2008. Pours a deep red with a large head, starting to dissipate. The aromas on this thing are pretty huge; I smell grass, fig, lots of black cherry, raisin, dark grape, bread, a bit of pleasant sourness. The mouthfeel is a bit thin. Flavour does not quite live up to the awesome aromas, but is full of dark fruit, raisin, cherry, pepper, a bit of chocolate. A bit watery. Short finish. JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Sep 18, 2008 500mL bottle from the LCBO. Went through a lot to get this. Pours a nice dark ruby with a large beige head. Aroma is unimpressive, very mild malts with nowhere near as much peat as I was hoping for. Creamed corn too, but not in the typical nauseating way. Flavour is decent, though much more mild than I was expecting. Nice Scottish malt body and flavours, with only the most minor of alcoholic hints. Minor toffee. Some herbal hops. Dry finish and aftertaste, something I would not really expect from a beer that is supposed to be prodominantly sweet and malty. I was really expecting more out of this one, but it is by no means a bad beer. Enjoyable, if somewhat bland. Not as full-feeling as I would want in something like this. I can see why this is not classified as a Scotch/Scottish Ale. wilderthanyou (411), Guelph, Ontario, Canada Sep 13, 2008 Man, I love this beer, pours a very dark amber with a thin slight off white head that leaves behind some mild lacing. Aroma seems a little subdued, but that may change as it warms. Some strange light notes of metal, with bigger notes of what I call Italian Christmas cake, caramel, and molasses. Big malty sweetness, Italian Christmas Cake, Dark Fruits, Trail Mix. Heavy on the tongue, slight dryness in the finish. I don’t know what it is about this beer but I frigging Love it. MrSifter (11), , Italy Sep 8, 2008 Sapore molto intenso, molto maltoso, anche se non ho molte strong ale con cui confrontarla Stew41 (1042), Caulfield, Australia Sep 7, 2008 Pours really well in the Orval trappist chalice. Bif creay head, just off-white, and a slightly murky maroon / brown body. Nose shows some stewed fruits, some caramel and perhaps a slight metallic, the latter not a bad thing. Heavy malts to taste, much weight than the nose might suggest. More hot fruits and some rhubarb (almost Belgian-like in this respect) along with a savoury cinnamon hint. Some scotch ale-esque colar flavours to finish. Actually shows a fair chunk of complexity, and came up a lot better than I expected. Must be the best Belhaven beer I’ve had to date.
