Belhaven Wee Heavy / 90 Shilling (Bottle)

If you looked up beer, this would be the picture in the book. Beutiful rich amber color with a thick frothy head. Has a very sweet caramel aroma. Not the best when first opened, needs to sit for a few minutes before it really starts to get tits full flavor. Very crisp bitter beginning, with a subtle grape wine flavor. A nice beer, a little too much alchohol flavor for my tastes, but very good still.

(500 ml bottle from Belfast Co-op) Pours a dark auburn with about 1/2" of soft biscuit head that is well-retained. Aroma of smoked peat, light caramel or molasses, hint of Scotch. Very nice lacing. Mouthfeel smooth, full, very slight sticky finish. Taste is great - the smoked peat overlays the light caramel maltiness, very slight hint of Scotch. Very slight bitterness in finish. Very good - this is one I’d much like to sample on tap.

Poured to a dark brown with hints of ruby, and a thin off-white head with little lacing. Aroma was mostly chocolate and malt. Although I did not think this was a smoke beer, that is by far the most dominant flavor I got from this thin-bodied beer, along with a hint of choclate. Finish was mostly a watery, smoky after-taste. I was looking forward to this, but was quite disappointed.

Pours out a dark brown color with little to no head. Aroma is malty and earthy. Flavor is very malty. Not bad, and certainly better then the scottish ale.

awesome brew, this is what got me into scotch ales. Poured flat, small head and great malt aroma. Who knew a brew with so little hops could be so flavorfull? Rich and thick, with plenty of alcohol warming the tongue. A tingle of hops at the end, but just a little.

A dark but clear reddish brown to mahogany with a lasting, though not towering creamy white head. The nose is subtle, with big sweet malt, a touch of chocolate, peaty smoke, and oddly, a touch of grapes (I feel like I’m always getting this impression from Scotch ales!). The palate is smooth and subdued. Very low CO2, with a stout-like feel, this biggish beer goes down easy. The flavors are the strong point in my book. Bold round malt giving everythign from a gentle sweetness, to light roast, and obvious peaty smoke. There’s some definite floral hops in there too giving this a really nice balance and drinkability. The lingering bitterness is primarily the roasted and smoke malt twang. I really enjoyed this quite a bit and I think I would offer this up to someone who hasn’t been exposed to decent beer yet.

Dark brown color with a thick fluffy tan head. Its super malty, caramel, toasty, some faint marshmallow, sweet. Flavor and aroma pretty similar. Some alcohol in the aroma. Creamy, full-bodied. I could drink a lot of this.

Bottle. Deep mahogany colour, moderate carbonation, little head. Wonderfully fruity malt aroma, molasses, dried fruits. Very complex aroma. Taste is sweet, licorice, full-bodied. Hides the alcohol very well. Very little hops. A bit heavy (duh..)
