GreenDragon (213), Richmond, Virginia, USA Nov 27, 2005 This Scotch Ale pours with a light brown rocky head on a deep orange-red body with thick creamy lacing. The beer has a toasty aroma with a hint of of dirt. A sweet honey nose caps a malty, rich, earthy flavour on a medium body with almost no bitterness. Excellent drinking! maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA Nov 27, 2005 Brown pour with a rocky off-white head. Aroma of scotch. Relatively smoky flavor. barenada (211), Georgetown, Indiana, USA Nov 22, 2005 (draft) This was decent, but there was just something strange about it. Some fruity characteristic that I couldn’t identify. There was a bitterness that came out of nowhere at the finish. rederic (1787), montréal, Quebec, Canada Nov 18, 2005 Deep amber color, with a frothy tan head, with a toasty, nutty and earthy malty aroma and a smokiness hint in the nose, follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a malty character, nutty, toasty malt, caramelized malt, note of smoke, fruity and toffeish, leading towards a grainy malty faintly bitter finish. bigrond (1043), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 14, 2005 this was better than the scotish ale but I didn’t think it was as goos the St’ Andrews - but it wasn’t as bad I it could have been. I just reading notes taken from a beer fest. I guess it was a little scetchy towards the end. SudsMcDuff (1691), was CapeTown,SA-now Houston, Texas, USA Nov 9, 2005 This Belhaven brew is Belhavens BEST! Wonderful smell, Great appearance with nice head that laces well, and the taste is outta this world, as said earler... one of the best scottish ales here in the US! Lou18 (1353), West Paterson, New Jersey, USA Nov 8, 2005 Updated: Nov 15, 2006This bottle poured a red body with a weak head. Kind of chunky. This was not so great, I was really wanting more.
Re-rate. Father-in-law wanted to know what a scottish ale is about? Pour was dark brown red, small tan head, left fast. Nose a bit of smoke and trace of wood.
Taste was more plastic, I was right the frist time. Strykzone (1459), Wood River, Illinois, USA Nov 8, 2005 Pours dark reddish brown. When put up to the light "floaters" are evident. Medium head dissipates quickly to a thin lace. Aroma is as fruity as some wines with raisen being evident. First taste is bitterness quickly followed by some tartness. After reading the glowing comments about this beer I was eagerly anticipating the "specialness" to kick in. For me it never did. There was something about the smokiness of this beer that disagreed with my tastebuds. There are lots of sublte nuances which distinguish a super beer. But for me there was that disagreeable smokiness.
