Bottle: Pours dark dark amber/red, looks brown until you put it to a light. Medium foamy beige-brown head, short lasted though. Sweet malty aroma with hints of coffee/roasted grains in it. Nice malty flavour with a bitter aftertaste, hint of chocolate and roasted grains in there. Mouthfeel was smooth, could of been a bit more full though. Not worth the price IMO.

4/6/02: superb malty aroma, deep amber color, and a taste to die for, this is the best scottish ale i have tasted...Re-Rate 8/3: Wasn't as good the second time..maybe because this time I wasn't caught of guard by the unique flavor..Re-re-rate 9/23: real smokey..like wood chips..I was more caught of guard than the second time..I don't ever remember noticing how smokey this beer is..

Pours a nice deep deep red. Aroma is of malts and a little fruity. Also a little brandy-like scent. Flavor is malty and a little smokey. Some bitterness as well. Pretty good stuff.

500 ml bottle. Pours brown with a thin tan head that faded to a film after a quarter of the glass and left no lace. Pleasant aroma of malt with a bit of earthiness to it. The flavor is rich and malty, and improves as the beer warms. Some notes of whiskey begin to appear as the beer warms as well. In addition, there is a nice earthiness to the malt. A tad lighter on the palate than I was expecting for a "wee heavy," but otherwise a very solid and enjoyable beer.

I liked this beer. Nice brown color with a decent head on it. Malty aroma has some dried fruits in there with a tad bit of peat/smoke. Sticky and medium bodied. Sweet and malty in the taste.

deep earthy brown tones w/ tiny hints of red and lots of visable carbonation a dense off tan head made up of tiny bubbles w/ a thick head. Nice well roasted aroma very sweet hints of chocolate and lots of carmels some definate dark fruits and I’d almost wager a hint of peat. Full palate lightly creamy and well coated. Sweet flavor chocolate over plums backing w/ some carmel. Light almost wood notes coming through, well roasted, very malty and a nice beer to drink.

darker amber color,Medium sized tan head that had a decent staying power and decent lace left behind.Sweet malty, caramel aroma with a light smoky side to it.The taste was great malty, caramel and a very nice smokey flavor nicely sweet. The after tase comes off as malty and smokey with a semi-sweet coating. This is a very nice brew,it's not quite in the league of a JP grays but it's close and very well done.
