Very malty and smooth. Virtually no carbonation in this beer. The alcohol was well masked and very drinkable.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 maxhits (172) - Pico Rivera, California, USA - MAR 29, 2002
This 6.5% ABV ale pours with a dark caramel color. It’s light tan-colored head is thick and stiff, and does settle in the glass with some lacing. Fairly light in carbonation. Aroma of toffee, roasted malt, some sweet stone fruit, particularly plum and some raisin. While there is a fruitiness in the aroma, the mouthfeel is a little chalky and chewy, while the finish is dry and bitter.
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Northernbrewer (147) - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA - MAR 16, 2002
dominant caramel malt flavors, and no hop character at all make for a beer that is a bit one dimensional. For a moderate abv and body it is a bit sweet.
Still, this beer has some subtle fruit esters and a touch of roast malt that makes it worth trying another bottle or two.

Dark amber-brown colour. Nutty, slightly chocolatey and slightly fruity aroma with a flavour to match. Surprising thin bodied for a beer of this strength and flavour. Tastes slightly burnt. It needs more body and depth.

Im not a big fan of the barley wine taste, but this beer has a lot to offer. This stuff comes at you from start to finish. Nice color in a glass. Hops were nowhere to be found. The malt is all you taste. Alcohol isn’t too overpowering. I liked this beer overall but prefer other Belhavens.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 erway (1004) - Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA - FEB 2, 2002
An absolutely huge malty beer. Tastes like a great barley wine less the hops. This is a beer you should enjoy when your not planning on eating anytime soon ’cause it’ll fill you up. For the first time in my life I couldn’t finish the dozen wings I ordered at the bar and it’s ’cause this bad boy filled me up somethin’ aweful!

Bright red color and weak head. Sweet and malty aroma and taste. Medium bodied. Like other Belhaven beers, but in a less marked degree, ends smoky and toasty.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2003 Bottled. Mahogany coloured with beige head. Rich, smokey aroma with notes of caramel. Sweet and very malty with flavours of licorice and peat. Soft mouthfeel. Notes of crystalized sugar in a finish with medium bitterness.
